Addiction is a social issue that outweighs the preponderance of racism and police brutality in our society. As someone who has experienced these issues firsthand, I wrote a research paper on human development that delved deeper into this topic. For those in behavioral health, in recovery, or struggling with substance abuse, my paper sheds light on why I believe addiction is the primary social issue of our time in the 21st Century. What is Fentanyl?
Created in a laboratory in 1959 by Dr. Paul Janssen, Fentanyl was initially used as an intravenous surgical analgesic. Fentanyl is 50-100 times more potent than morphine. Because of Fentanyl’s strength, the drug was rarely used except in hospital operating rooms or on large animals like elephants. Fentanyl produces effects such as:
• Relaxation
• Euphoria
• Pain relief
• Sedation
• Vomiting
• Nausea
• Respiratory depression
Street Fentanyl is not the same as hospital Fentanyl. Street Fentanyl pills mostly come from China. In 2021, 106,000 drug overdoses from Fentanyl were reported, making Fentanyl overdoses a leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults.
Don’t trust your kids. My message to you is to monitor your kids’ behaviors. If you suspect your kid of using Fentanyl, immediately go to your pharmacist, where you can buy over-the-counter Narcan nasal spray, which can negate the effects of Fentanyl, giving you a chance to call an EMT.
