In 1975, a rag-tag Palmetto High School football team, led by their new coach Frank Turner, overcame great odds to win the Florida Class 2A State Championship. It Manatee County’s first championship team.

A small group of players, along with Coach Turner, met with local media today at Palmetto City Hall. Here, Coach Turner is holding their front-page news, along with star RB Jackie Garvin. Also pictured are (from left) QB Ronnie Deans, WR Wilmore Fowler and, on the far right, Tom Tryon. They’ll be formally honored by the city on Monday night with a proclamation in their honor.

On the 50-year anniversary of of their accomplishment, the team is being honored by The City of Palmetto and others this month. We’re thrilled to have been a small part of having their incredible story told!

We’ve been thinking a lot lately about Freedom of Speech. Would you believe that today, Sept. 25, is First Amendment day?! (That was the day our new Congress passed a set of 12 amendments to the Constitution including the 10 amendments that would become the Bill of Rights.

Freedom of speech is fundamental to being American. But with that freedom comes responsibility. Words carry weight. Choose them carefully. And if you’d like help finding the right ones, I’m here for you!
