Media Prefs Community Colleges & Data

Media Prefs emerged from the mind of Dr. Pam Cox-Otto, a 40-year veteran of community college marketing and CEO of Interact Communications. Each semester media salespeople would pound on her door saying, "Buy this!" and "I'm sure we're reaching your market." And, just as consistently, Faculty and Leadership would pound on her door, saying, "Fill this class/program," "Put an ad in the newspaper,

or make me a TV spot, now!" every Fall and Spring. The need was clear: College marketers and their media buyers need academically defensible, quantitative data on what media are being used in the market, by what audiences, over time...

And Media Prefs was born.

Don’t make it hard for students to contact you. With Media Prefs, outreach can be easy — once you know students’ favorite ways to contact you!

Ensure your counselors and onboarding staff have email addresses that are easy to find on your website. After email, reaching out in person is the next favorite option, followed by a phone call or text. Both male and female traditional students would rather text than call as their third-favorite option.

And what about the least-preferred methods of contacting you? Automated chatbots, social media, and web forms or inquiries are at the bottom of the list!

In our tech-savvy times, it’s no surprise that students generally prefer college email for important messages, which is true across all ages and genders. Students 51+ also like being contacted via their personal email. The least favorite ways to receive notifications include social media, calls to personal phones, and direct mail.

Our advice? When in doubt, use email for your shout-outs!

Across the board, 2 in 3 students have iPhones. The difference is even more pronounced among younger students, where 3 in 4 are Apple users. Interestingly, female students are more likely to have iPhones, with 80% using that OS operating system, compared to 67% of male students.

Make sure your outreach has the right app-titude to really reach students and get plugged into your students’ preferences with Media Prefs!

Last week, we shared that QR codes slay (that’s Gen Z code for doing a great job 😎). Now, get ready to learn the top 3 reasons why students scan your college’s QR codes:

1. To take a survey
2. To enter a contest
3. To RSVP for an event

Now that you’re in the know, make sure to use your QR codes! And most of all, make sure your website is responsive and works well on a mobile device, so your students will thank you when they scan your links!

Are QR codes on fire or cringey? Answer: It’s getting hot in here! QR code use is at an all-time high, according to our latest data. Only 8% of students say they never use QR codes, and most who don’t are 51+. So don’t be cheugy, and include QR codes on your flyers, posters, and more!

Last week, we shared that very few students read the printed news. But don’t give up! Online local news deserves its dues. A whopping 60% of students say they read online local news sometimes, frequently, or always. In fact, more students in our survey say they are reading online local news than ever before!

The older the student, the more likely you can snag their attention in your online community paper. Plus, female students are more likely to frequent those digital pages than males.

If you’ve been advertising in your local printed paper, try pulling those campaigns and placing them online instead!

Should you place ads in the print newspaper? Unfortunately, nearly 3 in 4 students 16-20 never read a printed newspaper! Only 17% of all students say they sometimes, frequently, or always pick up the paper.

The group with the highest readership is students 51+, but even in that demographic, less than 15% say they read frequently or always.

Our take? If you want to run ads in the newspaper, it might be worth ditching print and opting for digital news instead!

Stay tuned for next week’s bite to learn more about how many students read online local news.
