To address physician shortages and expand access to high-quality medical training, Florida Polytechnic University and the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM) announced a new program that will allow students to earn both Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degrees in just six years.

“This is a transformative opportunity for students who want to become physicians and are eager to begin serving their communities,” Stephenson said. “By combining rigorous STEM education with a clear, accelerated track to medical school, we are reimagining what’s possible in health education and responding to a critical need for more doctors across Florida and beyond. This agreement also reflects Florida Poly’s 25|30 Strategic Plan’s commitment to build capacity through enhanced partnership development, strengthening our role as a driver of innovation and impact.”

In 1982, at the request of Congress, President Ronald Reagan issued a Presidential Proclamation on the observance of Women’s History Week. FloridaCommerce has announced that Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is available to businesses and residents whose employment or self-employment was lost or interrupted as a direct result of Hurricane Helene and are not eligible for regular state or federal Reemployment Assistance benefits. Eligible Floridians whose employment or self-employment was lost or interrupted as a direct result of Hurricane Helene are encouraged to submit a claim at FloridaJobs.org

As we face our first day post-Hurricane Helene, we know that many businesses and residents have suffered damages. Our businesses and neighbors on our islands and with property on or close to the Gulf, intercoastal waterways, and rivers have suffered substantial losses. County and city crews have been out for many hours assessing damages and clearing areas with debris. We are grateful for the work of so many assisting with immediate needs, including health and safety, utilities, transportation, sheltering, public safety, and more.

The State has already opened the 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲. Reporting estimated losses/damages early is really important to expedite recovery resources becoming available. Please begin your reporting and let us know if there are ways the Manatee Chamber can help.
