Hillsborough County residents will notice more helicopters flying low this week treating neighborhoods during daytime hours as the County works to stop the spread of dengue fever.

Neighborhoods in Bloomingdale, Palm River, East Tampa and East Lake will see helicopters in the air most of the week from Oct. 12 to Oct. 16 as the County works to protect communities from mosquito-borne diseases.

Helicopters flying low in the daytime are treating neighborhoods for mosquito larvae. They are working to break the life cycle of the mosquitoes using an aerial application of liquid Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), which is a naturally occurring bacterium. The product does not harm people, pets, fish, birds or beneficial insects, and it breaks down naturally in the environment.

The low-flying helicopters are applying this bacterium to standing water in neighborhoods to prevent mosquitoes from breeding there — particularly mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus.

A Brandon teenager is being recognized for her leadership, community service and commitment to helping others after earning the highest honor available to girl members of American Heritage Girls (AHG).

Lilly Belle Nimmo, 17, has earned the prestigious Stars & Stripes Award, joining the American Heritage Girls Class of 2026 to receive the organization’s highest recognition.

To earn the award, Nimmo completed a rigorous series of requirements. In addition to living out the American Heritage Girls Creed and Oath, she earned the Abigail Adams Level Award and 13 required Stars & Stripes Award Badges. She also held a troop leadership position for at least six months, wrote a Spiritual Walk Essay and AHG resume, received at least three letters of reference and passed a board of review.

A major component of the award was planning, developing and leading a service project requiring more than 100 hours of service.

Zack Hoening has loved drumming his entire life. He was part of the Newsome High School Marching Band and then became a part of the UCF Marching Band when he was in college. He has competed in numerous drumming competitions all across the state as well.

“I started my drumming journey in middle school through electives,” Hoening said. “This led me to falling in love with drumming and to doing marching band in high school and other band activities outside of school.”

He knew he wanted to keep drumming, even when he was told to have a backup plan.

“Drumming was the only thing I felt passionate about, and I knew I wanted to pursue it as a career,” Hoening said. “I got my bachelor’s degree in music and, since I was already in Orlando, started trying out for an open call for drummer or percussionist at the local theme parks.”

Hoening is currently a percussionist for a variety of theme parks including SeaWorlds’ new Halloween-themed show, Monster Stomp.

A Night At The Museum

For 15 years, A Night at the Museum has brought the community together for a family-friendly Halloween celebration at the Tampa Bay History Center. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, October 24, from 2-6:30 p.m. at the Tampa Bay History Center, located at 801 Water St. in Tampa.

With 15 trick-or-treat stations to explore, photo opportunities with favorite characters, a costume contest and hands-on activities.
