May is the right time to plant a tree in southeast Michigan. The soil's warming up, we're past the last hard frost, and the new tree gets a full growing season to put roots down before winter.
But the species you pick matters more than most people think. A tree that's wrong for our soil, our weather, or that specific spot in your yard will struggle for years and quietly disappoint you. A tree that's right for the spot will live for generations to come!
Around here, the species we recommend most are the ones that built southeast Michigan in the first place. Red maple, Sugar maple, Swamp white oak, Hackberry, Eastern redbud, and serviceberry for smaller yards and ornamental presence. These are native; they're built for our weather, and they hold their value as the property matures.
Skip the box-store discount rack. Those trees often look fine the first year and decline fast.
