Kevin Walsh keeps proving he belongs with the best in the featherweight division.
Last night, he stepped into the ring against Dannis Aguero Arias, a dangerous veteran with a 20-5 record and serious knockout power. The fight didn’t last long. Kevin blasted him out in the first round, moving to 21-0 (once BoxRec updates it) with 11 knockouts.
Think about where this guy was just a few years ago.
He was fighting on small local cards around New England, slowly building his name. Since then he’s beaten tougher and tougher competition every time out. Former world title challenger Tramaine Williams. Veteran Irvin Gonzalez. Then he went across the Atlantic to Belfast, Northern Ireland, and outboxed hometown favorite Michael Conlan in front of Conlan’s own fans. Not many American fighters are willing to take a fight like that, let alone win it.
Now he’s the WBC International Featherweight Champion, undefeated, and knocking guys out at a higher level than ever.
Then came the moment everyone started talking about.
After the knockout, Kevin called out WBC Featherweight Champion Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington.
Some people will say it’s too soon.
I’m not so sure.
At some point, an undefeated fighter has to stop chasing rankings and start chasing champions. Kevin has done everything that’s been asked of him. He’s taken tough fights. He’s fought on the road. He’s stayed active. He’s kept winning. What else is there to prove?
Whether the next fight is Carrington or another top contender, one thing is becoming pretty clear.
Kevin Walsh isn’t just one of New England’s best fighters anymore.
He’s becoming a legitimate player in the featherweight division, and the rest of boxing is starting to notice.
The opportunity is coming.
The only question now is who’s willing to step in the ring with him.
