Owning a website comes with various costs, depending on your needs and requirements. Here are some of the common costs involved:
Domain Name: The first cost is registering a domain name (e.g., www.yourwebsite.com). Domain prices can vary depending on the domain registrar and the domain extension (e.g., .com, .net, .org). Generally, it cost between $10 and $20 a year.
Web Hosting: To make your website accessible on the internet, you'll need web hosting. Hosting costs depend on factors such as the hosting provider, the type of hosting (shared, VPS, dedicated, etc.), and the resources you need (e.g., storage, bandwidth). Most new or smaller websites can use shared hosting to start. Generally, shared hosting costs between $1 and $15 a month.
Website Design and Development: If you're building a custom website or hiring a web designer/developer to create one for you, this will incur a cost. The cost can vary based on the complexity and functionality of the website. For a basic 5 page website, Harlandhills can build a hybrid website (customized template) for between $500 and $700. It will be on the lower end if the client provides the text content.
Options for building a basic website:
TEMPLATE: Website builder - Cost $0 to $170 /month.
CUSTOM: Web designer/freelancer/agency - Cost $2,000 to $9,000
HYBRID: Web designer to customize a template - Cost $500 to $5,000
Content Creation: Creating high-quality content for your website, such as text, images, videos, and graphics, may require hiring writers, photographers, or designers. Going that route can yield great results, but it's not practical for most small and startup business. Some alternative resouces are to do it yourself or go to UpWork and Fiverr.
Website Maintenance: Regular updates and maintenance are necessary to keep your website secure and running smoothly. This can include software updates, security measures, and bug fixes. Basic maintenance plans can range from $50-$200 /month based on how many hours of work you require each month.
E-commerce Costs: If you're running an online store, you'll need to consider costs associated with setting up and maintaining an e-commerce website, including a shopping cart, payment processing fees, PCI compliance and security measures for online transactions. If you require a shopping cart, online shopping platforms like Shopify provide an all-in-one shopping cart, PCI Compliance, security and credit card processing system. Price ranges from $30-$300 /month. If you want more control over the process, options like WooCommerce, OpenCart and BigCommerce are also reliable options.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Paid Ads and Marketing: Promoting your website and driving traffic to it may involve investing in search engine optimization (SEO) services, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, social media marketing, and other digital marketing efforts. We have found it's best to develop both an immediate advertising campaign as well as formulate a long-term strategy focusing on SEO. Cost ranges from free DIY to no limit.
SSL Certificate: If you're running an e-commerce site or handling sensitive information, you'll need an SSL certificate to ensure secure data transmission. SSL certificate costs can vary based on the type and level of encryption. There are 3 types of certificates available today: Extended Validation (EV SSL), Organization Validated (OV SSL) and Domain Validated (DV SSL). For basic security, DV SSL is the most popular and cheapest. Most hosting providers include this for free along with your hosting plan. Other options range from $99 to $700 per year.
Analytics and Tracking: Implementing analytics tools to track website performance and user behavior may come with associated costs, especially for advanced analytics services. We have found that Google Analytics does a good job and its free. There are more user-friendly options like Semrush or Crazyegg. Price ranges from $30-$500 /month.
Legal and Compliance: Depending on your website's nature and location, you may need to consider costs for legal services, privacy policy generation, GDPR compliance, and other legal requirements. There is no price standard for legal. Some reputable sources are LegalZoom, Rocket Lawyer and FindLaw.
It's important to carefully plan and budget for these costs when starting and maintaining a website to ensure its success and longevity. Additionally, remember that ongoing expenses like hosting and maintenance will recur, while one-time costs like web design may only be incurred during the initial setup.
