Performance Max best practice nobody writes down:
Cost data settles quickly. Revenue data does not.
I reviewed a week of channel data two days after it closed.
YouTube showed $1,366.74 in spend and zero attributed revenue. The obvious reaction was to remove the video assets.
A few days later, I pulled the exact same dates again.
Spend: $1,366.33
Revenue: $883
ROAS: 0.65
Nothing meaningful had changed in the account. The only variable was time.
It was not a one-off.
Another Performance Max window moved from 0.86 to 1.44 when it was re-read 48 hours later, a 67% change without any campaign adjustments.
Why does this happen?
Advertising costs are recorded quickly, but conversions can arrive later. Someone may click on Monday and purchase on Thursday. View-based and modeled conversions can take even longer to appear.
That means a fresh report often contains complete costs but incomplete revenue.
The solution is to establish a settle window:
Select a closed week.
Record its ROAS after 3, 5, and 7 days.
Identify when the result stops materially changing.
Avoid major cuts inside that window.
Re-read the same dates before taking action.
Record the report’s read date beside every result.
Our current settle window is five days. Yours may be different.
This is not permission to wait forever or assume every channel will recover.
Discover ROAS in the same account moved from 0.13 to 0.47 after settling. It improved, but it was still losing.
Waiting did not rescue the channel. It gave us the accuracy needed to identify the correct cut.
Have you ever checked how long your account data takes to settle?
