David and Jennifer met nearly 25 years ago over a magazine assignment and stayed friends ever since. In 2021, they reconnected with a shared goal: create a practical book and workshop series to help families grow. Thus Try This at Home was born.

They asked us to design more than a book—it needed to become a flexible, lasting brand. We built a clean identity system with simple, instructional-style illustrations and a cover that quietly reflects the stages of life happening inside the home.

As a workbook, it was designed to be used. Swiss binding lets it lay flat, sewn pages keep it durable, and every spread leaves room to think, write, and reflect.

The goal wasn’t just to make something beautiful, but something people would actually come back to.

Wow. When we asked for volunteers to test the Remember journal, we honestly expected just a handful of responses. Instead, you, our friends online, showed up in a big way, and we now have far more volunteers than we’re able to include.

It wasn’t easy to narrow it down, but we’ve selected a cross section of our audience to move forward as the test group. If you were selected, you should receive an email soon with more details.

If you weren’t chosen this time, please know how grateful we are for your willingness to help. Your encouragement and messages of support for our work and its mission have meant a great deal to us. It’s a powerful reminder that presenting Adventism beautifully matters to many people. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Remember journal will be available later this year. Join our email list on our website to follow the journey, and be the first to know when it’s available. https://rememberjournal.com/

We’ve been working on something new.

A journal structured around the weekly rhythm God established at creation.

It’s coming later this year, but before it launches, we’re looking for a small group of people to test it.

Three weeks, honest feedback, early access.

This isn’t how most branding projects begin.

Four designers. One ice storm. A dark Mexican restaurant in Grayling, Michigan. When the power went out, we ate burritos by phone flashlight and talked about rebranding Camp Au Sable—one of Adventist camping’s crown jewels. As former campers and staff ourselves, this project was especially meaningful to us.

David recognized that the camp’s signage, logo, and overall visual identity were outdated and in need of repair and refresh to better reflect all that the camp offers its visitors.

Back to the ice storm. Over the next couple of days, we drove through ice and climbed around broken trees to see the landmarks around camp, talk and share meals with the team, and learn about the rich history and nature of Camp Au Sable.

The question is: How do we capture the camp in a simple and memorable brand identity? Our approach was to distill Camp Au Sable down to it’s core elements: white pines and firs, the boardwalk, the lake, and a reflection.

The abstracted reflection emphasizes the camp’s focus on helping campers and guests pause, reflect, and grow in faith, relationships, and character.

Beyond the logo, we built a complete wayfinding system with custom icons and a typeface (by Ivan Ruiz Knott) inspired by the camp’s historic signs. It’ll take time to roll out, but we’re honored to help shape the Au Sable experience for years ahead.

If you need a copy of Christ’s Object Lessons, you can pick up one of our brand-new softcover editions, or choose the heirloom-quality Light & Life Collection or the Light & Life Sharing Set—both of which include COL.

Huge thanks to Blue Vineyard for hosting our Creative Director, Brett Meliti, for the latest episode of their podcast. Brett had the chance to discuss some recent projects (even an unreleased one), the strategy behind our branding work, and how the message of Adventism deserves to be communicated beautifully.

If you’re not familiar with Blue Vineyard, they are a group of Adventists building digital solutions to help organizations better serve their mission.

Give them a follow and check out the podcast on your favorite podcast platform.

If you found yourself but without the shirt, we’ve got you covered (literally).

Nearly five years ago, invited us on a journey through The Desire of Ages.

That reading challenge—DA with DA—became a life-changing experience for thousands, deepening our love for Jesus and renewing our appreciation for Ellen White’s writings.

Since then, David has led several other ‘with DA’ challenges, all accompanied by a limited edition shirt to commemorate the journey.

Each design was only printed once, and we’ve never offered them again—until now.

We’re thrilled to partner with Red Letter Apparel, a wonderful Christian company based in Missouri, to bring these shirts back.

Each shirt is made-to-order and typically ships within 7-10 days of your purchase.

If you ever get an email that begins, “It looks like the devil party on the 31st of October had an impact on your Godly work,” you can be pretty sure the rest isn’t great news.

Our trusted printer and friend, Marco Schorr, sent that note from Germany to let us know about a shipping delay. Apparently (and this was news to us) smuggling drugs inside religious books is a thing—so our container was pulled for a security check.

The good news: our books are drug-free.
The bad news: they missed their original ship.

A new spot has been secured, and the books are now scheduled to leave Bremerhaven at the end of next week. The ETA to New York is November 25, after which they’ll travel by rail before making their final journey to our warehouse in Michigan by truck.

We know many of you preordered hoping to receive your books by Christmas, and we’re still optimistic we’ll meet that deadline. Delays like this are frustrating, and we’re truly sorry for any inconvenience.

Please know how much we sincerely appreciate your patience, prayers, and continued support for this work. As soon as the books arrive, we’ll begin shipping and keep you updated along the way. 🙏

Happy Great Hope Day! ✨

October 22, 1844, was a day of great disappointment, but we call it Great Hope Day because we continue to claim the promise of His soon return.

That hope is what inspires everything we do, and it’s why we started Types & Symbols ten years ago this month.

📕 To celebrate, we’re offering The Conflict Beautiful in Sanctuary Colors, with marbled page edges, for $144—a savings of $55 and the same price we used during our original Kickstarter campaign in 2018.

This is the best deal we’ll ever offer on these books, so if you’ve been waiting to get a set for yourself—or as a gift—now’s the time.

One day only—October 22.

Use code "GreatHope" during checkout. Check it out: https://www.typesandsymbols.com/products/books-the-conflict-beautiful
