Before texts, emails and social media, a postcard could carry a thought across the globe!

Albert Einstein, the well known physicist, regularly sent postcards to stay connected with friends, family and colleagues while traveling and working around the world. Some carried personal messages, others scientific thoughts and glimpses into every day life. Some have even turned up at auction and sold for thousands of dollars!

Its fascinating to think how an extraordinary scientist used this ordinary way to communicate such important ideas!

Another Falling Rock Postcard has reached its destination! 🏖️ This one arrived on the island of Crete in Greece! The Ancient Greeks believed Crete was the birthplace of Zeus, the King of the Greek gods. Today Crete is known as a Mediterranean getaway with pristine pink sand beaches. Thanks for sending this one in, Amy!

Morgantown Then & Now

A trip to Morgantown would be incomplete without making a stop at Woodburn Hall. Built in 1876, this landmark building of West Virginia University grew and expanded along with the mission and reach of the university. The cupola of this historic building even holds the signatures of university students scribbled and etched into the plaster walls. The oldest signature dates back to 1882. Although the building was once considered for demolition, the bell tower of Woodburn Hall has watched over Morgantown and generations of students for 150 years!

Did you know?

Before Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States, in his youth he served as a small town postmaster?

In 1833, 24-year-old Lincoln was appointed Postmaster of New Salem; a small Illinois post office. This position placed him at the center of the community and gave him the opportunity to read the newspapers and books that passed through his little post office. If Lincoln knew someone was waiting for an important letter, he was known to walk miles to personally deliver it (decades before mail delivery was common).

Abraham Lincoln served in New Salem until the office was closed on May 30, 1836. Although Lincoln served long before the popularity of the postcard, his connection with the mail is a wonderful reminder of how much history can pass through a mailbox.

So the next time you reach for your mail, we hope you'll think of this beloved president - and the days when Lincoln himself might have been the one bringing the mail your way!
