ART ON VIEW
International Collage Exchange and Vermont Feministe
at Stone Valley Arts in Poultney, through November 3, 2019. In 2017, Erika Lawlor Schmidt, Executive Director of Stone Valley Arts at Fox Hill, was a participating artist in the International Collage Exchange, (ICE), organized by Dale Copeland in Taranki, New Zealand. While in the process, she found Copeland’s invitation to art venues around the world seeking to host the 20th annual ICE exhibit. She wrote Copeland, inquiring about the possibility for Stone Valley Arts as the next destination for the ICE show. She was surprised and delighted to find out that Stone Valley Arts had been accepted! This 20th annual ICE exhibit features 76 artists from around the globe. The show features collage crafted with found papers, ephemera and objects, painting, drawing and digital pictures. The artists explore the surreal, the sublime, the humorous, the nostalgic and cerebral and several artists have written their personal stories on the back of their collage. These stories add perspective, emotion and understanding to their artwork.

Shown alongside ICE is “Vermont Feministe: Regional Invitational”:
In the planning for the ICE exhibit, Lawlor Schmidt felt it important to the community to include a select group of relevant and recognized Vermont artists to exhibit in tandem with ICE. Each artist offers a unique take on the female experience. Their visceral, emotional, psychological and spiritual observations, occurrences and memories are explored and revealed through the language of collage. Heidi Smith, Jane Davies (Jane Davies Studios), Nina DuBois and Athena Tasiopoulos (Athena Petra) join Lawlor Schmidt in representing their region. (image by Heidi Smith. Courtesy of the artist.)

ART ON VIEW
"We're Not in Kansas Anymore: New Paintings by Valerie Hird" opens tonight (9/6) at Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery in Shelburne, 5:30-7:30. Featuring new work produced especially for Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery, it includes both the final pieces from her series "New Mythologies", which explore an alternate creation story, and a first look at "Don’t Ask Alice", a series of hand-painted paper stage sets that describe her own "biomythology", a narrative that lies uneasily between actual history and personal memory of travels in the Middle East and Central Asia. For the past decade, she has created a colorful new elemental world and invested it with mythological symbols from our shared legends and folktales. LAST CHANCE
Fiber: No Boundaries
Northeast Kingdom Artisans Guild in Saint Johnsbury through June 1, 2019. This Vermont artisans cooperative, which began its 21st year in September 2018, features crafts and fine art by more than 100 artisans. Their Backroom Gallery exhibits change every six weeks. Three Vermont craftswomen have taken the traditional utilitarian crafts of blanket, rug and wall cover beyond practical status, into the realm of art. Beginning with cloth, hands, needle and thread, these crafts have altered the aesthetic appeal into a deeper context, of emotion, enriching the viewer with fresh ideas and imagined ideals. OPEN STUDIO WEEKEND
The Hive
Middlesex. "Ascent, Part One: Eulogy" in the Portal Gallery of The HIVE VT through July 15, 2019. Located in the burgeoning Camp Meade along with Red Hen Baking Co. and Nutty Steph's Chocolate, The Hive shows off the talents of local artists and artisans with a vibrant and unique selection of local art, wood products, glassware, handcrafted jewelry, decor, and many other handmade gifts. Ryan Geary's collection of 2D and 3D collages tell the story of multiple Americas. Through images of our past and present, images used in their historical context or just for their symbolic and emotional power, “Ascent” is an attempt by the artist to deconstruct the “reality” and “history” of the America he, as a white male, has known.
