toddopolis Sharing creative work, tips, thoughts and ideas focused on writing, art direction and other elements of marketing, advertising and branding. Writer. Optimist.

Adventurer. I collect Pez dispensers, wanted to be a Ringling Bros. clown, climbed to the tops of some great mountains. rafted a few wild rivers, fly-fished some of America's greatest streams, and appeared in Rolling Stone (but let Michael Jackson have the cover). I've delivered papers and dog food, served fries and flipped burgers, painted houses, sold American flags, worked as a Hydroflume Techn

ician, performed stand-up, entertained at weddings, taught at a university, and created humorous, heartwarming, surprising and compelling stories for a variety of national, regional and local B2C and B2B clients. For the past 30ish years, I've had the opportunity to develop and write broadcast, social, web, print, outdoor, collateral, direct, speeches and sales presentations for great clients like Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Hoover Vacuums, Dad's Pet Foods, GNC, Mellon Bank, PNC Bank, First Commonwealth Bank (I guess I like banks), the St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Blues, Pennsylvania Travel & Tourism, The Alleghenies, Magellan GPS, XM Satellite Radio, and many more.

Today toddopolis turns 7. It's something that wouldn't be possible without the trust and friendship of those I get to work with and the never-ending support of my wife, who rarely questions crazy long days, the occasional sleepless night, the presence of little notebooks that go with me everywhere, and the need for a night in The Vault with a double scotch or bourbon and an album spinning while the lava lamp bubbles. Thanks to all of you, toddopolis is possible. It's been a great ride.

Some clients want to spend their marketing dollars on television. Some think social media is the best way to reach people. Others want radio or outdoor or (gasp) print. But sometimes you get more for those dollars by spending them in places that may not be as flashy, but are impossible to miss. Who's up for knocking out some incisors?

In March, 2015, the place I loved to work shut its doors and the talented people I loved to work with scattered off to other agencies or other cities. I was one of the last to walk out the door and watched as it locked behind me, closing the chapter on 15 great years with lots of great friends and clients. For all of us in those last days, there was a lot of talk of what would be next. For myself, I thought I would take a shot at doing my own thing and seeing if I could maybe make that work. I gave myself six months. And here we are, six years later, still doing that thing. I'm amazed every day that I get to do this. Amazed in the clients who have trusted me with their brands, blown away by the support of friends, partners, family and my wife, who is and has always been my biggest cheerleader, supporter, believer and advisor. Thank you to everyone who has inspired me, taught me, encouraged and trusted me. When I asked my good friend Matt Hildebrand to provide an updated toddopolis logo with the 6th year cupcake in place, he sent four - 6, 7, 8 and 9. I thanked him for being so optimistic. I thank you all for being so amazing to work with.

Two heavyweights duke it out in a creative battle to be your first choice in shipping. I'm giving FedEx the win for using the more visible idea to deliver a message that takes you a second to get. Thanks for giving your customers credit for being smart enough to figure it out.

A business card is a business card. Or not. For a lawyer who helps people through the challenges of splitting up, a card that splits as well is what makes his firm unique. One for him, one for her while they settle on what's his and hers. A neat idea for a messy business.

As we near another shutdown of inside dining at restaurants through the new year, this message from Burger King stands out. Whether it's a chain or (better yet) an independent, local favorite, let's help keep their kitchens cooking and servers serving so they can make it through to better times ahead.

I'm never a fan of stores putting up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving or, worse yet, Halloween. But if you're going to have an early Christmas sale in October, at least take a little tip from IKEA and announce it with some creativity and style.
