An environmentally friendly church located in Englewood, NJ. Parking is discretely located under the building to remain out of sight, while reducing the heat island affect created by black asphalt parking surfaces. On the top of the building and also covering the parking area are roof gardens with low lying ground cover plants and light-colored concrete paver stones that reflect the heat from sunlight, reducing the heat island effect typically contributing to heat gain in urban neighborhoods. Designed according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, the most widely used green building rating system in the world. I managed this project from design and zoning, to contract documents, construction administration, project close-out, and post construction commissioning of MEP systems. Work performed while employed as Project Architect at Fernandez Architects, AIA, LLC. Interior made up of bible study rooms, offices, chapel, gymnasium with wood basketball court and kitchen/serving area with commercial equipment. We were able to go beyond the maximum allowable lot coverage by using the roof gardens and landscaping, along with a 10,000 gallon rainwater harvesting tank. The captured water in the tank is used to irrigate the site.
