“When we plan for the outdoors, we’re planning for the unknown,” says Lutricia Eberly, executive director of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Recreation Association (PORA), in a story describing a family headed to the Poconos for whitewater rafting with rain in the forecast. How would the weather impact the trip? The answer turned out to be a good family lesson: rain happens, and it isn’t a reason to stay inside.

Lutricia recently joined Sylvia Maus on iHeartMedia Inc.’s Insight podcast to talk about the PA Outdoor Adventure Pass, a digital pass that gives fourth and fifth graders a full year of outdoor experiences across Pennsylvania for $69, from skiing and whitewater rafting to caves, zoos, kayaking, and train rides.

Rather than committing a child to one sport for an entire season, the PA Outdoor Adventure Pass lets them try everything on it once and discover what they enjoy most. “They’re forming a lifestyle of outdoor activities instead of getting locked into just one,” says Lutricia. “And because the Pass runs 365 days a year, all four seasons, families can use it whenever the calendar opens up.”

September is Hunger Action Month, and it starts with good news!

Shila Ulrich, CEO of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, has been named one of Pennsylvania Business Central’s 2026 Women in Business Top CEOs & Leaders. Her vision and passion for solving food insecurity in our communities is contagious. Under her leadership, the food bank supplies 1,100 pantries across 27 Pennsylvania counties and reaches 596,000 neighbors.

“We cannot control the weather, and we cannot rewrite federal budgets,” says Shila, “but as neighbors, we can step up to close the hunger gap and keep our community healthy.”

Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🎂🇺🇸

George Washington described our nation as “the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.”

Children ages 8–12 now spend an average of 5 hours and 33 minutes a day on entertainment screen time. So how do we make it easier for families to choose something different?

Pennsylvania Outdoor Recreation Association (PORA) Executive Director Lutricia Eberly joined Asia Tabb on WITF’s The Spark to talk about the PA Outdoor Adventure Pass, why 4th and 5th grade is such an important time to build lifelong outdoor habits, and how one simple pass is helping families discover adventures across Pennsylvania.
