Members 1st Federal Credit Union appeared twice in the May 8 issue of Central Penn Business Journal, offering perspective on two different but deeply personal decisions: buying a home and finding the right job.

In her op-ed, Erin Hermany, Senior Vice President of Consumer Lending Operations at Members 1st, shares that homeownership is still possible when buyers understand their options, start early, and have the right guidance.

In a separate story on the growing use of AI in hiring, Christine Pavlakovich, Chief Operating Officer at Members 1st, explains why the credit union continues to prioritize human interaction throughout the hiring process. “The human piece of our culture is critical,” Pavlakovich says. “Screening and interviewing for a cultural fit requires human interaction.”

From helping members navigate the mortgage process to making sure job candidates are seen as people, Members 1st shows us how they help members thrive and better the communities they serve.

It’s Screen-Free Week!

Today, at the Pennsylvania State Capitol, the Pennsylvania Outdoor Recreation Association (PORA) brought together families, healthcare leaders, legislators, outdoor recreation businesses, and student ambassadors to celebrate a different vision for childhood: one built around movement, exploration, connection, and outdoor adventure.

PORA highlighted the PA Outdoor Adventure Pass, a statewide initiative helping 4th and 5th grade students and their families discover outdoor experiences across Pennsylvania while supporting the small businesses that power Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreation industry.

Children ages 8–12 now average more than five hours of recreational screen time every day. The Outdoor Adventure Pass helps families swap screens for real-world adventure through experiences across the Commonwealth.

One pass. One state. Big adventure.

Did you know? Kids ages 8–12 spend more than five hours a day on entertainment screens.

“National Screen-Free Week isn’t just about turning off devices; it’s about giving kids something better,” says Lutricia Eberly, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Recreation Association (PORA).

Today at the Pennsylvania State Capitol, PORA is marking Screen-Free Week by highlighting the PA Outdoor Adventure Pass, a program designed to help kids spend more time outside exploring, moving, and trying something new.

Available to every 4th and 5th grader in Pennsylvania, the $69 pass opens the door to a full year of outdoor experiences across the state, from climbing and kayaking to farms, caves, and adventure parks. It gives families a clear starting point and removes the guesswork of where to go or what to try.

Today’s press conference brings leaders in business, health, recreation, and government together with students already using the pass, showing what’s possible when kids get outside.

Deeter Gallaher Group Owner & CEO Anne Deeter Gallaher brought 30 years of public relations experience to the stage at the 2026 Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Conference, leading a session on the conversations that shape careers, businesses, and most importantly, relationships.

In “How to Talk to People: Making Conversations Fun, Authentic, and Impactful,” Anne shared what she’s learned from decades of working with leaders, teams, and clients across industries.

Seven of Anne’s go-to principles:
1. Lead with curiosity, not a script
2. Ask questions that invite stories
3. Listen like a journalist
4. Share a little—be self-aware
5. Use the power of encouragement
6. Look for common ground
7. Leave people feeling better than when you met them

Congratulations to Samantha Chivinski, Cierra Abrachinsky, Bob Carl, and the Schuylkill Chamber team on a wonderful, inspiring event.

A highlight from the day: Angela Meck, owner of The Farm Store in Pottsville, PA, shared that she listens to Grit & Gravitas and loved the Painterland Sisters episode!
