Could medical cannabis be beneficial for the opioid crisis?

You only have to look at the recently published numbers to draw your own conclusions.

In a review published in 2022, researchers discussed the fact that chronic pain patients who used medical cannabis managed to reduce the use of opioids by 64%. Further, these patients reported they had a better quality of life and fewer side effects with cannabis than with opioids.

In one study, access to ma*****na dispensaries even demonstrated a significant drop—17%—in the number of opioid-related fatalities in certain areas.

One of the largest studies to date, published just this year, evaluated over 8,000 medical cannabis patients in NY with chronic pain who were also using opioids. The longer a medical cannabis patient used cannabis for pain, the lower their opioid dosages dropped.

You may have heard of CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), but did you know cannabis contains more than 100 cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are the biologically active compounds found in plants that belong to the cannabis family, as well as a few other plant species. You may be unaware that cannabinoids are also found in:

-Echinacea

The research into cannabinoids is just getting started. But, there is no doubt cannabis holds substantial promise when it comes to medicinal value.
