Our experience using a little internal gamification tool for one week.
Last week we tried out a little internal tool I made for assigning a score to various tasks and tracking them over the course of the week. The idea was that we could let people see their progress in real time and also incentivize some friendly competition.
A last minute addition was a +50 point bonus for logging your first task of the day. This worked surprisingly well in getting people to actually open the app every day and stay engaged with it throughout the week.
The points definitely need some balancing. It's been tough to make things feel "fair" across multiple disciplines, since the nature of the work can vary so much from person to person. But at the end of the day, this is just a tool meant to be fun and maybe help some people track their progress visually so they can feel more accomplished about the work they're putting in.
Overall, the team seemed to really enjoy it (particularly the account team!).
What's new this week:
We added the ability to create custom tasks for when you're doing something specific that isn't listed in the available options. You can write out exactly what you did and assign a point value to it. We also added some new smaller tasks and tweaked some of the existing values slightly.
Of course, all of this is cheatable. But it's just a tool to be used for fun and not taken too seriously. And if you do decide to go wild with the points, there is an activity feed where everyone can see exactly what you've been up to :)
