“Aphrodite, Cupid and Envy”

Aphrodite is disarming the cupid by taking one of his
bows.

The masks of comedy and tragedy can be seen by
Venus's feet.

Envy is represented as a horned creature or demon
situated behind cupid.

On closer inspection, a snake appears to coil from the
creature's mouth, also representing jealousy.

The pink roses in the top right of the scene represent
beauty, passion and love.

"Remarkable wooden sculpture entitled 'A Matter of Time' by artist Paul Baliker.

This huge and elaborately carved piece took 6 months to finish and it is designed as a three-dimensional mandala that represents the diverse species inhabiting Earth, including an owl, a parrot, monkey, turtle, giraffe and a rhino among others. At the centre of the structure is the face of an old man with an outstretched arm holding the world in the palm of his hand. This symbolises the potential for a symbiotic relationship that man can share with nature."

Sarah Biffen, 1784-1850, was a Victorian painter born
with no arms and only vestigial legs. She nevertheless
taught herself to write, paint, sew and use scissors with
her mouth. This is a self-portrait she painted using her
teeth.
