Drones and water don’t mix. At least not the kind I fly with. So, how do I fly from boats and around water, waterfalls, and the ocean to maximize safety? These 5 tips might help.
1. Check Weather Conditions: Before taking off, always check the weather forecast. Wind, rain, or unexpected storms can make flying tricky and increase the risk of losing your drone to rough weather.
2. Disable Sensors When Near Waterfalls: If you’re flying near waterfalls or metal boats, turn off the obstacle and forward motion sensors. The downward pressure created by a waterfall can suck your drone in, leading to potential water damage. Disabling these sensors helps avoid unwanted descents into risky waters.
3. Maintain a Safe Distance: Always keep a safe distance from the water’s edge and ensure you’re not flying too close to the surface, especially on the ocean. This minimizes the risk of accidental water landings and helps in maintaining control of your drone.
4. Be Mindful of Wind Shear: When flying near large buildings, trees, or mountains, stay alert for wind shear. Sudden changes in wind direction and speed can occur as it flows around obstacles, potentially impacting your drone’s stability and control.
5. Practice Before You Fly: Spend time practicing your flying skills in safer, dry conditions. Familiarize yourself with your drone’s controls and capabilities, especially how it reacts when flying near water. Practice makes perfect!
