The best marketers know that the way to get someone to take action is to make them feel an emotion.

Mediocre marketers keep this surface level. They try to get their audience to feel basic emotions like happiness, sadness, or anger.

But marketing masters take things a step further.

They target precise emotions and then craft their messaging and content around that.

According to DAIVID, this will help viewers develop a more positive brand sentiment.

Study companies that are already doing this well and then mimic them. As usual, you’ll be able to find more instances of B2C companies succeeding at this than B2B companies.

Villain marketing is a major growth hack 😈

Choose something as your villain, then go after it in your marketing. Hard. The more cutthroat, the better.

We recommend choosing a concept or category to be the villain.

If your company makes a B2B sales tool, maybe your villain is the traditional sales cycle.

If your company deeply believes in content-first marketing, maybe the idea of old-school lead generation is your villain.

If you’re a cyber security company, maybe a lack of employee education about cyber risks is your villain.

If you’re selling a cold email tool, maybe bad/outdated data is your villain.

Use your marketing channels to fight the villain. Say why it’s terrible. Say why your way is better.

Over time, people will start to side with you. You’ll become the hero.

Quick disclaimer: there might be rare cases where you can pick a person as your villain, but be VERY careful doing this. It might drive some short-term engagement—after all, who wouldn’t stop and watch a fistfight playing out right in front of them? But it could damage your brand in the long term.

Most of that engagement will be fake, and you might end up looking like a bully. Nobody likes a bully.

If you want to give villain marketing a try, stick to attacking ideas, not people.

your readers will have those issues too.

It’s your sign to keep editing and improving.

Plus, an added bonus: reading copy out loud makes it easier to catch typos. When you read silently in your head, your brain automatically corrects for errors, but reading aloud stops this.

Very frequently, I give writers (my students) the advice that they should read their work out loud while revising. I give this advice because it helps me to catch errors in writing, but I did not have evidence to back up my advice… until now.

Picture this 💭 the next time you host a webinar, you have a referral section at the bottom of your email promoting it. As a result, you get 5% more people registering for no additional work.

Or your team just spent six months building out a massive research report. You’re super proud of it. You email it out to your customers with a referral section at the bottom. Your cost to acquire the 200 extra downloads through the referral program was $0. The cost per download of the LinkedIn ad campaign you’re running for it is $65 each.

These are just two examples, but hopefully, you get the idea. The sky is really the limit when it comes to how creative you could get.

In most of the existing referral program examples we found, the programs offer promo items or tchotchkes (we admit we had to look up how the heck tchotchke is spelled 😂).

B2B brands could do this, too. But we’d recommend thinking bigger.

Companies could offer discounts on their customers' monthly subscriptions, free tickets to industry events, sponsorships at their annual conference, access to exclusive content, etc.

If someone refers you a subscriber who goes on to purchase your high-ticket B2B product/service, that would be a massive ROI for you!

Don’t be afraid to exchange more than some stickers or a t-shirt in order to acquire that referral.
