COB vs. EOD
Business acronyms. They make lengthy emails easier to digest, leading to better communication, and make you feel a little like you’re communicating the instructions for a covert mission. However, acronyms can also be confusing and frustrating. Have you ever received an email from your boss or colleague asking to have a task completed by COB or EOD? If you’ve felt confused or nervous, you’ll miss some unspoken deadline -- you’re not alone.
COB
COB stands for “close of business.” It refers to the end of a business day and the close of the financial markets in New York City, which define U.S. business hours. It’s used in business communications to set a deadline for a task to be completed by 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST).
EOD
EOD stands for “end of the day.” (and not End of Delta or End of the Days .) It’s used to set a deadline for a task that should be complete by the end of the business day -- typically 5:00 PM. When no time zone is provided, the end of the day is relative to the sender’s time zone.
