When I was in elementary school, a well-meaning art teacher gently suggested I “pursue other electives.”

To give grace, she wasn’t wrong… my stick elephants weren’t winning any awards (and it didn’t help that I sat next to the class Rembrandt 🙃).

But here’s what she couldn’t have known:
1. Tech advancements were going to shift the art world.
2. My true canvas would become pixels, not paper.

Fast forward—and I’m forever grateful for the mentors who opened the door to graphic design and encouraged me to chase creativity in a whole new way.

So when I was asked to stand on the other side of that door and share my love for design with the next generation of creators, you bet I showed up!

Here’s to throwing doors wide open 🚪✨ and hopefully inspiring them to discover their own mediums—whether it’s one we know today or something brand-new the future holds.

Walmart’s "Ctrl+B" Rebrand: A Bold Move or Just Bold Text?

Walmart’s latest rebrand is here, and while it might not win any awards for creativity, there’s more to unpack than meets the eye.

From a design standpoint, it’s functional but forgettable. From a PR angle? Well, they turned just a hint of change into a full-on viral sensation—so, kudos to them.

My Designer Take
Let’s start with the obvious: the design itself is... fine. The updates stay safe, sticking closely to the existing brand identity, which means no one’s getting lost in the aisles trying to figure out if they’re still at Walmart.

What does stand out, though, is the improved legibility. The subtle tweaks to color contrast are a smart move in an increasingly digital world, where readability across devices is critical. It’s not exciting, but it’s functional—and sometimes, that’s enough.

Still, it feels like a missed opportunity. Walmart had the chance to do something bold, memorable, and refreshing but instead, they opted for “safe and subtle.” It’s the design equivalent of upgrading your glasses prescription—useful, but not exactly thrilling.

My PR Perspective
This is where things get interesting. Walmart’s PR team deserves a round of applause for turning what is essentially someone typing "ctrl+b" into a viral event.

It’s a classic case of “press is press.” Whether people are raving about the practicality or poking fun at how little changed, Walmart has managed to dominate the conversation. And in the end, isn’t that the point of a rebrand rollout?

Overall Impression: Functional design, excellent PR. A solid reminder that basic can make headlines if you spin it right.

What do you think?

👩‍💻 Ever wondered what's the deal with web designers and web developers? 🤔 Let's break it down in a way that's easy-peasy lemon squeezy! 🍋

🎨 Imagine you're building a house. The web designer is like the architect 🏠 They're the creative brains behind the design, choosing the colors, layout, and overall look and feel of your website. Think of them as the ones who make your site visually stunning and user-friendly!

💻 Now, onto the web developer! They're like the construction workers 🔨 These tech-savvy folks take the designs created by the web designer and bring them to life. They use coding languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build the structure of the website, making sure everything functions smoothly and flawlessly.

🤹‍♀️ So, in a nutshell:

Web Designers = The creative masterminds 🎨
Web Developers = The tech wizards 🔮
Web Unicorn = rare gem who possesses the magical ability to seamlessly blend web design and development skills. 🦄

Working with a web unicorn ensures efficiency, streamlined communication, and a holistic approach to building websites, resulting in cohesive, visually stunning, and functionally robust digital experiences. (Hint: that's me! ✋😉)

I love my work! There are some who look at their job as "just a paycheck," but I feel like what I get to do is so much more! I don't just make things pretty, functional, and accessible (although that is a part of it). I get to help individuals take their dream, that "big idea" that they are so passionate about, and help turn it into a reality.

Some of my recent projects include designing and prepping book manuscripts for print. Opening my email to this message from one of the authors put an extra big smile on my face and pep in my step today:

"I’m laying in bed tonight, smiling. To see "Unparalyzed" almost ready for all to read, I can’t into words how that feels. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me! And I really appreciate you making those pictures beautiful! :)" - KTM

Let's chat about responsible photo editing practices, especially in light of recent... ahem... royal mishaps.

👑 So, remember that royal family Photoshop fail? Yep, it's a great example of what can go wrong when photo editing goes unchecked. But fear not, my friends! Let's break down the when, where, why, and how of responsible photo editing:

🕒 When: Timing is everything! It's crucial to edit your photos at the right moment. While it's okay to tweak lighting or color balance, resist the urge to alter the essence of the moment captured. Authenticity is key.

🌍 Where: Where you edit matters just as much as when. Ensure you're using reputable software and platforms to help maintain the integrity of your images and prevent any unexpected mishaps.

⚖️ Why: Why are you editing? Be honest with yourself about your intentions. Is it to enhance the natural beauty of the scene, or are you trying to misrepresent reality? Remember, transparency is fundamental in photography.

🎨 How: Ah, the million-dollar question! How should you go about editing responsibly? Start by mastering the basics: adjusting exposure, contrast, and cropping. And when it comes to more advanced edits, tread lightly. Less is often more!

Now, let's talk about scenarios where you should NEVER hit that "Edit" button:

🚫 1. News and Journalism: Altering photos in news or journalistic contexts can compromise integrity and mislead audiences.

🚫 2. Historical Documentation: Photos serve as a snapshot of history. Editing them can distort our understanding of the past.

🚫 3. Personal Identity: Respect people's identities. Significantly editing features like skin tone or body shape can perpetuate harmful beauty standards.

🚫 4. Legal Documentation: Tampering with legal documents or evidence is a big no-no. It's not just unethical; it's illegal.

🚫 5. Scientific Research: In scientific research, accurate representation is essential for credibility and validity.

Remember, folks, with great editing power, comes great responsibility. Let's keep our pixels pristine and our edits ethical. Happy editing! 📷✨

Here is a quick typography lesson you didn't know you needed to know!

In the early days of printing, individual characters were cast in metal for use in printing presses. The term "fonte" was then applied to refer to the process of casting these metal typefaces. Over time, it came to represent the entire collection of characters in a particular style and size cast for printing.

As printing technology advanced and digital typography emerged, the term "font" continued to be used to describe the visual representation of characters in a specific style, size, and weight, whether in print or digital form.

When working with a graphic designer, it's important to request logo files in various formats to ensure versatility and compatibility across different platforms and applications. Here are the main logo file formats you should always discuss with your designer:

1. Vector Formats:
✨ EPS (Encapsulated PostScript): A vector format that can be scaled to any size without loss of quality. Ideal for print materials and large-scale applications.

✨ AI (Adobe Illustrator): The native format for Adobe Illustrator, commonly used by designers. Retains editable vector data and is suitable for further customization.

2. Raster Formats:
✨ PNG (Portable Network Graphics): A raster format with support for transparency. Ideal for web use and digital applications where background removal is necessary.

✨ JPEG/JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group): A common raster format suitable for web use and digital platforms. *Use high-quality, web friendly settings to minimize compression artifacts.

✨TIFF (Tagged Image File Format): A high-quality raster format commonly used for print materials and professional applications. Supports layers and transparency.

3. Other Formats:
✨ PDF (Portable Document Format): While not a native logo format, PDF files are versatile and can be easily shared and viewed across different platforms. Ensure the PDF includes vector elements for scalability.

✨ SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics): A vector format commonly used for web design and scalable graphics. Ideal for responsive web design, integration with HTML/CSS, and clothing prints.

By requesting logo files in these formats, you ensure that you have the flexibility to use your logo in various applications, whether it's for print materials, digital platforms, or branding collateral.

Let's talk about serif and sans-serif fonts like they're characters in a font party!

🎉 Serif Fonts: Imagine serif fonts as the classy party-goers. They're the ones with those little decorative flourishes at the ends of their letters – you know, the extra swag on the strokes. They're like the fancy folks at a ball, making everything look traditional and a bit elegant. Think of Times New Roman, Baskerville or Garamond – they're the fonts that have been around the block and know how to keep it sophisticated.

🎈 Sans-serif Fonts: Now, let's switch to the sans-serif crew. These fonts are like the cool, laid-back pals who keep it simple and modern. "Sans" means without, so these fonts ditch the fancy extras and stick to clean lines. Helvetica, Roboto and Arial are the rockstars of the sans-serif world. They're all about clarity, especially on screens – think of them as the chill fonts that keep it casual but cool.

So, in a nutshell, serifs bring the charm and tradition, while sans-serifs bring the modern, no-nonsense vibe. It's like choosing between a classy dinner party and a relaxed hangout – depends on the mood you're going for! 🌟📜
