In 7th grade, my class had an assignment: write step-by-step instructions for how to do something. I could have chosen how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or how to screw in a light bulb.

But what did I actually choose? How to publish a book.

This was long before self-publishing really existed the way it does now, so my instructions were all about traditional publishing. I do not remember every step I wrote, but I am pretty sure step one was something like: "Write a book."

Now, many years later, I am finally very close to publishing my first one.

"I don’t have time to work on it."
"I started a website but never finished it."

Thinking about updating your author website?

A well-designed site isn’t just about eye-catching colors—it’s about reflecting your voice, supporting your brand, and making it easy for readers to connect with your work. Whether you're just starting or planning a refresh, your website plays a key role in how readers view you as an author.

I’ve written a blog post that breaks down three essential areas to focus on: Look, Feel, and Function!

šŸ‘‰ Read the blog: From Page to Screen: Building a Website That Reflects Your Author Brand https://www.myauthorwebsite.com/post/from-page-to-screen-building-a-website-that-reflects-your-author-brand

It's a quick read, but could spark some fresh ideas for your next website update!

Your website is your digital home—a central hub where readers, publishers, and media can learn more about you and your work. For authors, a well-crafted website is a powerful tool for building your brand, engaging with readers, and driving book sales. Whether you're a seasoned novelist or just beg...

Writers, want to grow your audience using your website?

Here are 3 tips you can implement today (yes, today!) to start turning visitors into readers—and readers into fans:

1ļøāƒ£ Add an Email Signup
Your website is your digital home—and your email list is your direct line to readers. Don’t rely solely on social media algorithms. A simple opt-in form on your homepage or a pop-up can make all the difference.

2ļøāƒ£ Create a Reader Magnet
Give visitors a reason to sign up! A freebie like a short story, sample chapter, or exclusive bonus content is a great way to introduce new readers to your work—and show them what they can expect from you.

3ļøāƒ£ Link to Your Books + Socials
Make it easy for people to find (and follow) you! Add clear buttons or links to your books, whether they're published or coming soon—and make sure your socials are connected so readers can continue the conversation.

Do you already have these on your website? Or is one of these your next step? Let us know in the comments!

Attending virtual summits is a great way to grow as a writer!

I’ve been diving into sessions at the Women in Publishing Summit (hosted by Alexa Bigwarfe) and Perfect Your Process (with Daniel Wallace), and I’ve been taking notes!

šŸ“ One key lesson that really stood out to me was communication—from me as a service provider to authors, from authors to their readers, and even broader communication with the public. This includes essential tools like media kits, newsletters, and, of course, websites!

I was especially drawn to discussions about marketing and author branding. It’s a great reminder that authors need to take charge of their online presence and ensure they are reaching the right audience.

Virtual summits like these are packed with valuable insights that help us level up our writing and business skills. What’s the best writing or business tip you’ve learned from an event?

What makes a great author website?

Your website is your online home as an author—it should reflect your brand, engage readers, and make it easy for them to connect with you. But what are the must-have features? Here are a few essentials:

āœ… A compelling author bio that tells your story
āœ… Clear book information that makes readers want to dive in
āœ… A way to stay connected (newsletter signup, social media links, contact form)
āœ… A clean, professional design that enhances your brand

Which one do you struggle with the most?
