Mary Bortz with Fusion Edge Photography was our speaker on 7/6/2023
She talked to us about Finding Inspiration
I look for inspiration for my photography by attending yearly photography education classes, traveling, music videos, music album covers, my peers, art galleries, fine art gift shops, antiquing and more.
Finding Props and Backgrounds
Most of my props have been built ourselves like the pond with waterfalls in our outdoor garden and benches. other props have been found antiquing such as the gazebo and red settee, garage sales or purchased from other photogs and various stores. love to antique in Kalona and Mt. Vernon.
Why decorate your home with portraits?
It shows that you love your family and care. it shows you are family oriented when showcasing your family at your place of business. You are an example for the future in valuing family heirlooms and memories. What story are you looking to tell in your session? As professional photographers we understand everyone’s milestones are exceptional and extraordinary as the
individuals themselves. We like to involve the client in the creative process.
Marketing advice from my field
β€œThinking about how you are going to gain customers and how you're going to retain customers. How to onboard new clients? What is your marketing strategy? How do your follow up with past clients to continue your relationship and encourage new business? put all this in your plan and adapt it as needed. Mastermind groups, accountability partners, business coaches,
business networking groups like synergy all great options for collaborative partnerships.
Making the investment in your professional image. Hire a professional photographer to
photograph you. Trusting the expertise of other professionals will pay off. Hire a graphic designer for logo design and marketing collateral design. work with copywriters to create effective messaging. Consult with social media marketers, digital advertising pros and SEO experts to maximize your chosen marketing platforms. You have to deliver. deliver so that clients trust you and your partners want to use their relationship to help open doors for you.” Credit goes to Professional Photographers of America.
Summer sessions why? Summer sessions are great to add variety in your home. Sunset or evening sessions are quite trendy right now. The lighting is soft, warm and lovey this time of year. You have your summer glow and feel happy to be outdoors with nature. Choose a
soft palette in clothing such as pastels and creams. Flowy summer dresses paired for the ladies and young girls. Beige pants or shorts with a pastel soft color shirt for guys and boys. It’s ok to go barefoot.
Why hire a professional photographer?
Let the professional help you create the session you want. Let them help you give advice on clothing selection. Your making history and memories for your loved ones.

Steve Gilbert with First Class Cleaning began in 2004. Steve was managing New Life Fitness and was working 60+ hours per week. His wife Deb told him, if he was working that much, he should be working for himself. She had already started several businesses on her own and felt they could deal well with people. She had a dog sitting business and many of those customers had asked where they could find reputable people who would do home cleaning. She took a list of previous clients and began making calls. They began cleaning homes, and then Sprint asked them to clean their offices in Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha and Iowa City. They purchased another cleaning company and began cleaning the offices of Countrywide in Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, Cedar Falls, Waterloo and Coralville. They were responsible for cleaning the former Ground Transportation Center in downtown Cedar Rapids, but with the flood of 2008, many of those businesses did not survive. First Class can do many different types of cleaning. They clean hardwood floors and do move furniture out of the way to clean. They have done gymnasium floors, carpets and will clean windows. When cleaning windows, they do both the inside and outside of the window. They have completed cleaning for Pak Mail, Cedar Valley Physical Therapy. When cleaning offices, they dust, wipe down or clean, but do not step on desks, move keyboards or touch personal items. They have a blind cleaning machine that will take care of blinds and chords, but Steve is no longer offering this service, so the machine is for sale. Everyone out there is Steve's boss. He used to clean dance clubs, he has cleaned out apartments where tenants have left lots of garbage, but only does commercial work now. To learn more or to schedule an appointment for his services, give him a call at 319.362.5510

Trisha Cornwell, ESG Professional Accountants – accountant. Madeline Smith, substitute. ESG provides accounting and payroll services for small businesses. They assist in cleanup for all clients.

Amber Henline, Salveo - massage therapist. Yoga will not be offered after the end of the month. Amber will use that area. A room will be available for rent for a compatible service. Amber wants to assist active people.

Dr. Chris Smith, Chiropractic Clinic of Iowa - chiropractor. Dr. Chris has been assisting athletes who are finishing the soccer season or preparing for the next sports season. Many athletes are lifting weights, getting ready for volleyball and football. There is no off-season for any sport.

Chris Fredrickson, Pak Mail - shipping expert. Pak Mail now offers a white glove service, by unpacking items moved and taking items away. It may be cheaper to send items by truck, but not leave them on the driveway. Pak Mail will pack it, ship it, crate it, freight it, and then uncrate your items.

Mark Baumann, American Specialties - promotional products. Mark does screen-printing and laser work. He showed a model ship, which will be mounted on a pedestal and made into an award. If you need something creative or unusual, he can assist. Your name is his game.

Marcia Baumann, Farmers State Bank - mortgage and consumer lender. Interest rates continue to rise, but the home equity special is still available until 06/30. With a 700 credit score, you can get a home equity line of credit, with an interest rate of 3.50%, fixed for 5 years. Use this HELOC now or for future borrowing needs.

Amy Moore, Park Lane Jewelry - jewelry consultant. Many jewelry pieces are genuine. While the price may be higher with genuine stones, up until Wednesday, you can get two items valued up to $200, for $30. You can qualify for this special once you have $60 worth of items in your cart.

Lisa Huggins, Neighbor Insurance - insurance agent. Lisa will review your commercial or personal policy to make certain you have the proper coverage. She also assists elderly customers with Medicare questions and with Medicare enrollment starting in November.

Ranae Juhl, Bankers Trust - commercial lender. The Federal Reserve has raised their interest rate by .75%. Ranae advises you wait to see what the market will do. Midweek is the time for market adjustments, so this is a good time to make decisions about purchases. It is still a good time to buy, no need to get totally upset about interest rates.

Todd Neighbor, Cedar Valley Physical Therapy – outpatient orthopedic clinic. Todd will see anyone who is in pain. He does the dry needling technique and is going for the next certification. If dry needling will help, get an appointment to see Todd.

Eric Langston, Aegis Law - attorney. Eric will assist with any legal needs. He will review a company's capital structure, utilizing hard assets in a tax sufficient manner. He is highly trained in taxes, doing succession planning and partnerships. If your partnership has no formal agreement, upon the death of a partner, the partnership will be liquidated and divided among the survivors. Make certain your plan is in place.

Andy Schaul, Andy's Lawncare - lawncare specialist. Andy will mow yards once or twice as needed for vacationers. He is busy doing yardwork.

Steve Schroeder, Skogman Realty - realtor. While home mortgage rates are higher, homes are still a good investment. Steve talks with buyers and sellers to understand their goals.

Steve Gilbert, First Class Cleaning - commercial cleaning expert. Speaker today.

Network education – Chris Fredrickson. We are all in the sales business as we seek new clients and tell them about our products and services. Sales people, who actively seek out customers, earn 4-5 times more than those who do not. 91% of customers would give referrals, only 11% of business people ask for them. Always follow up on referrals; 30% to 50% of sales goes to the vendor who contacted the client first. Thursday is the best day to prospect, Wednesday is next. The best time to make cold calls is at the end of the day. Many times, you will not get a return call overnight and you may not reach prospect immediately. It takes an average of eight cold call attempts to reach a prospect. Once reached, 80% of the sales require a follow-up after the meeting. Whether making a call or a presentation, after the meeting, 63% remember your stories and 5% remembers the statistics. 78% of sales people use digital means, and outsell their peers. Email is 40% better than Facebook or Twitter in acquiring customers; however, the best means is LinkedIn. 92% of all customer interactions happen over the phone and it is a good idea to do check in-calls with old clients. 78% of sales people who use digital media outsell their peers.

Lisa Huggins, Neighbor Insurance – insurance agent. She can write personal lines, commercial lines, health insurance and Medicare. She is seeing many customers who are purchasing new homes. When purchasing insurance, bundle your new home and automobile policies, to save money.

Steve Gilbert, First Class Cleaning – commercial cleaning. They specialize in commercial cleaning and can take care of practically anything in an office or building.

Todd Neighbor, Cedar Valley physical Therapy - outpatient orthopedic clinic. They are up and running with dry needling and the sessions are going well. Todd worked with a patient who had a sprained ankle, and did the dry needling technique on her; she was out of pain that evening. Sometimes dry needling will work that quickly, but Cedar Valley can assess the pain and make a recommendation.

Steve Schroeder, Skogman Realty – real estate agent. Steve is a specialist in residential real estate. He feels sales will still be strong later this year, despite the rising interest rate environment.

Amber Henline, Salveo – massage therapist. Salveo is a self-care studio that offers massage, acupuncture, a nurse practitioner, muscle injections and esthetics. Massages can be done when nothing is wrong; you just need your body attended to and cared for. Once a massage is completed, individuals leave rested, rejuvenated and refreshed; ready to tackle problems and take on the world.

Mary Bortz, Fusion Edge Photography – photographer. Mary is scheduling sessions in her water garden studio for your children or grandchildren. She is also booking high school senior sessions for summer and fall. It is time to make reservations for photo sessions with the red truck.

Dr. Chris Smith, Chiropractic Clinic of Iowa – chiropractor. Dr. Chris is treating pregnant women; pregnancy is rough on the body. There are issues with carpal tunnel, hip, back and knee pains.

Kevin Bullard, All Tune L**e – car care specialist. Kevin said many parents are fixing up older vehicles for their beginning drivers. However, many parts and products are climbing upward in price and metal parts are hard to find. He does not see this trend slowing down and advises you to take advantage of getting parts while they are still available.

Kyle Borman, Access Systems, (substitute for John Morgan). Access Systems is an information technology company with inside sales for copiers and printers. It is getting harder to get parts and to assist with any print equipment.

Mike Ferguson, Consultexes LLC – IT consultant. Mike will work with companies who want to change internet providers and become more efficient. He assists those who are going from DSL to expanding a phone system.

Chris Fredrickson, Pak Mail – shipping expert. Since the supply chain is a challenge for all of us, Pak mail tries to mitigate that challenge. They have a licensed export specialist who can work through the red tape of shipping internationally. Once an item is delivered to port, you must then have delivery scheduled inland. Pak Mail can assist those travelling or moving overseas.

Andy Schaul, Andy's Lawncare – lawncare specialist. Andy offers mowing services for those going on vacation. He will schedule short term mowing for a week or two weeks.

Trisha Cornwell, ESG Professional Accountants – accountant. They provide accounting and payroll services for small businesses. Trisha will help set up QuickBooks and assist in cleanup for clients.

Mark Baumann, American Specialties – promotional products. Mark will complete embroidery, laser work, screen printing, and is a personal shopper. He quoted a special on pens early this morning for a client and will find you savings in his shopping. Take advantage of his shopping and save yourself money. Your name is his game.

Marcia Baumann, Farmers State Bank – mortgage and consumer lender. There are no supply chain issues at Farmers State Bank – they are still offering the home equity line of credit special for 3.50%, no closing costs, loan to value ratio up to 85% with a credit score of 700. Save on the closing costs and use the savings to fill your gas tank.

Amy Moore, Park Lane Jewelry – jewelry consultant. Amy showed a new line from the catalog. In the next two week, you can buy two regular priced items and get four at half price. When your shopping cart hits $60, you can receive an item valued at $200 and pay $30. Find another item and get free shipping. When spending $90, you can receive $460 worth of jewelry. No one pays full price at Park Lane.

Ranae Juhl, Bankers Trust – commercial lender. (Allie Limbert, substitute) Interest rates are starting to rise on deposits. This is a great time to do commercial real estate loans and equipment loans.

Eric Langston, Aegis Law Office, attorney. When conducting business, a quick mode of payment is necessary. However, fraudsters are able to view wire transfers so it is necessary to ensure you have a confidential payment method. Once a wire transfer is sent, it is difficult to get it returned. He is happy to schedule a one on one session to explain this in more detail.

We took a field trip to Fusion Edge Photography, 540 S. Troy Road, Robins, Iowa so Mary Bortz could give a tour of her studio and showcase the products she offers. Her interior studio features multiple-colored backdrops, a chandelier and large plush chairs. She showed a trio of pictures that can be framed, on an easel or done as a canvas wrap. Pictures can be displayed on a metal wall mount, and a mosaic wrap (which wraps all around the sides). She does prints on barn wood, photographic cubes, metallic finishes and accordion files of multiple pictures, along with holiday cards, greeting cards and ornaments. She does not offer packages of portraits; customers create their own packages by ordering any prints and sizes with digital pictures available too. We went outside to tour her backyard studio that features a stone and rock waterfall, pond, wooden bridge and several seating areas. She has an area painted with a Tuscan design and posed the group for a couple, small family and large family setting, while giving pointers on how to sit and stand for a portrait. One of her favorite props is a red 1950 Ford pickup truck which she uses at her home studio and in surrounding areas. To learn more or schedule a session, give her a call at 319.294.1144

Mark Baumann, American Specialties - promotional products. Bic pens are on sale for 40% off which is a great buy for any company. These are great pens, which always work, and you can order the pens in all sorts of free color combinations. Your name is his game.

Marcia Baumann, Farmers State Bank - mortgage and consumer lender. Unfortunately, mortgage rates have risen, but Farmers State Bank still has a home equity special with an interest rate of 3.50% for a credit score of 700 and up to 85% loan to value. There are no closing costs, so this is an excellent opportunity to purchase or refinance debt.

Amy Moore, Park Lane Jewelry – jewelry consultant. For a well-put together look, try 7-10 pieces of jewelry. Use a set of three bracelets on each arm and mix and match the colors and textures. Also, use three necklaces and a set of earrings and be sure to add in some sparkle. Jewelry is like Jell-O; there is always room for more!

Lisa Huggins, Neighbor Insurance – insurance agent. Lisa can provide insurance for your automobile, home, toys and commercial lines, which include property, business auto, equipment, health and Medicare products. If purchasing a new home, she can package your home, auto, toys and umbrella policies together for a better rate.

Mike Ferguson, Consultexes LLC – IT consultant. Many do not want to hear or respond to security audits and update security. Mike can assist with an audit, he knows the baseline required and understands other components that need to be in place. He will also deal with auditors on your behalf.

Ranae Juhl, Bankers Trust – commercial lender. Ranae will assist with any difficulties you may have with your current commercial lender. She will lend for large commercial purchases and construction of a commercial building.

Todd Neighbor, Cedar Valley Physical Therapy – outpatient physical therapy clinic. Todd has completed his certification for dry needling. While this technique is not appropriate for all, Todd will give an evaluation. People who moving to a new home and are lifting and moving heavy items can get a quick fix or healing of a long-term injury.

Trisha Cornwell, ESG Professional Accountants – accountant. ESG offers support on payroll services for all types of businesses, along with benefits support. If you do not have a human resources department, they can assist with reporting, adding, and removing employees.

Amber Henline - Salveo, licensed massage therapist. Salveo is offering their final yoga trapeze boot camp. There are a few openings left for the summer accountability program that begins June 6 and runs through August. This program will help you to lose weight, set goals and incorporate healthy habits into daily living. The cost is $180, and the program comes with a downloadable app for your phone. Amber will help you smash your goals.

Chris Fredrickson, Pak Mail - shipping expert. Airlines used to be accommodating with luggage and larger items like golf clubs, but they have added many space and weight restrictions. Bring these items to Pak Mail and they can quote the cost to send luggage, additional clothing or sports equipment for your vacation. They can also ship the items, include a return label, so you can re-pack your items, and have UPS ship them back to Pak Mail. They will pack it, ship it, crate it, freight it and have it returned to you.

Steve Schroeder, Skogman Realty – realtor. Steve is a specialist in residential real estate and always answers his phone and returns calls. He assists sellers in getting ready to list and assists buyers in qualifying for a purchase.

Kevin Bullard, All Tune L**e – car care expert. Several weeks ago, there were repairs relating to tires and brakes; now the repairs are more tires and air conditioning issues. Your A/C may feel cool, but it may not be cooling well as it could. Refrigerant will leak, so your system should be checked and recharged for proper operation. The compressor may not turn on if coolant is too low. Check on needed summer car repairs.

05/26/2022

Mike Ferguson with Consultexs was our speaker today
What are common features to a phishing email? Fifteen percent of all computers have been infected with malware in 2021. The number one attack on a computer is phishing. Phishing is generic, whereas spearphising is directed at an individual. For example, spearfishing targets someone who conducts a lot of company business via email; an email may appear asking to give assistance, by asking the individual to click on a link inside the email. If something does not seem right, it probably is not right. Worldwide, there were 114 million URL's sent for phishing. It is all about money, many are employed just to defraud people out of their money. The damage in 2015-2016 was 1.5 trillion billion dollars. In 2025, the estimated loss is 10 trillion dollars. Experts can try to block emails, but this is so immense. When you take 50 bad actors off the list, there are 60 more to take their place. Phishing does have some common factors. Hover over an email address to see if it is legitimate. Most emails will not ask you to click a link; legitimate emails may show a website that you can visit. In a phishing email, there will be a threat or something that is too good to be true, something to entice you to click the link. Never call a phone number in an email, call from your contact list or go to the company website for a phone number. Do not Google a phone number. The biggest problem is the number of attacks. Last year there were 64 million attacks registered by Google. What should you do? Make sure your software can be updated and that you are updated. This covers your Alexa, refrigerator and home network router. Internet service providers do not always help you out. Regardless of your internet of things, devices need to run on an isolated network because you still run the risk that these could be targeted. Separate your network to avoid being hacked. Make certain you have backups. COVID changed the world; people started using equipment they had not used before in or a long time. Make 100% sure that you know where something is going; it is easy to send an attachment, verify it is sent in a secure manner.

You need to receive this service from your commercial lender, in partnership with your attorney, accountant and insurance agent.

Andy Schaul, Andy's Lawncare – lawncare specialist. Andy has received multiple calls from customers who need mowing done since they have received a notice from the city. He will take care of all lawncare needs.

Eric Langston, Aegis Law Office - attorney. Eric is a general civil practitioner and does work for business, real estate, contract negotiation, wills and trusts.
