The conversation around AI in marketing is starting to move past experimentation and into accountability. Coca-Cola tracking weekly active drinkers, Hershey using real-time data to guide media decisions and United building an employee creator program all point to the same shift: marketing teams are being asked to connect their work more directly to business growth.

That is a good thing for the industry. The strongest marketing functions will not be the ones using AI just to move faster. They will be the ones using better data, sharper measurement and more real-time consumer insight to make smarter decisions and prove why marketing belongs in the room where growth decisions are made.

Lay’s latest World Cup work is a good reminder that challenger thinking is not limited to challenger brands. The campaign does not just rely on star power or a major sponsorship. It finds the overlooked rituals around fandom, from grocery runs to watch parties to group chats, and builds the brand into those moments.

That is where the smarter marketing lesson lives. Challenger brands often win by finding a behavior bigger brands miss or underuse. Lay’s is applying that same mindset at scale, turning a simple product role into something more ownable: if you are watching the game, Lay’s should be part of the experience.

The growing demand for IRL experiences is not a rejection of digital. It is a reaction to digital that feels too passive, too constant and too disconnected from real life.

That is what makes examples like Pinterest’s phone-free Coachella activation, Claire’s in-store ASMR sets and Crocs’ event moments worth paying attention to. Each one gives consumers something they can touch, try, make or remember. For marketers, the opportunity is to stop treating real life as content for the feed and start building moments that can stand on their own.

As Gen Zers prioritize mental health amid screen fatigue, they are increasingly looking for ways to connect in real life, and brands are starting to get the message.
