I recently posted a series of photos I took during the COVID lockdown days of the birds that hung out near my house.

As I mentioned in that previous post, I’m not a wildlife/nature photographer—but sometimes I can still come away are some decent images of animals. Here are some shots I’ve gotten over the years of birds that weren’t kicking it in my yard.

Prior to the covid pandemic, I was shooting a lot of travel & landscape images, live bands & promo shots, and corporate events & headshots… all things which require interacting w/ folks and/or leaving the house. However when the lockdowns went into effect, everything I had been doing was suddenly put on an indefinite hold.

I was hungry to get out & shoot, but I couldn’t. I eventually found myself spending hours on the porch of my house, watching the various birds visiting the feeder & birdbath, or hanging out nearby. I am definitely not a wildlife photographer—I don’t have the gear for it & shooting birds at a feeder may be seen as cheating by folks that are legit bird/wildlife shooters—but I did enjoy grabbing the longest lens I had (a cheap, slow 70-300 f/4.5-5.6) & capturing what was going on in this tiny environment.

played a great show at the Cave back in early September shortly before releasing their latest album ‘Golden Reviser’. I had just retired the camera I’d been using for the past decade & this was the first show I shot while getting acclimated to the new one. It was a fun experience & a nice reminder of how great it is to live in a place overflowing with talented folks.

Busted out the 105mm f/2.8 macro for some experimentation w/ multiple exposures, colored gels on off-camera flashes, and some extreme close up shots. Most of these are of some leaves I collected months ago & let sit on my desk until they dried out. Then there’s Abe on a fiver, the pattern on a paper towel, a pot of boiling water, and an electrical outlet. What I like about shooting like this is how it reminds me that using different perspectives—in this case literally taking a closer look—can reveal some very interesting details in objects which might otherwise seem mundane. Applying that concept to how you approach life can be quite helpful; it can make a boring task you’re dreading seem much more tolerable; and it can help you not overlook people, places, and things that might have a lot more to them than you initially think.

These were shot back in February, one week after I moved into an apartment in Chapel Hill. The complex was installing new mailboxes & left the old ones sitting on a slab of concrete. There was something interesting to me about these huge, rusty metal boxes sitting there like some sort of dystopian Stonehenge.

These images were captured while wandering the streets in the tiny Portuguese fishing town of Carvoeiro back in May of 2024. Something I really loved about this town is how there was so much fascinating visual content in an area no bigger than about 3-4 square blocks. What I really appreciate about that is how it serves to remind me that this is the case no matter where in the world might find ourselves. There are fun, cool, quirky, interesting, and/or beautiful things all around us all the time. We just have to remember to see them.

I first became aware of the tiny fishing village of Carvoeiro on Portugal’s southern coast about 12 years ago. From the moment I first laid eyes on images of the place, I knew it was somewhere I needed to visit at some point in my life. A trip was in the planning stages back in 2019, but the Covid pandemic put that on hold for several years. Finally, I was able to spend a week in this magical town in May of 2024. It was all I hoped for and then some.

Stunning natural beauty is everywhere as you stroll along the cliffs & come across secret beaches and caves; and it’s met with a quirky & interesting mix of traditional and modern architecture. The people were incredibly friendly & the food was some of the best I’ve ever had.

I spent the early morning of my birthday walking along the cliffs at dawn & it brought me so much joy. It felt like I had the entire Algarve to myself… well just me and a few seagulls anyway. Once the morning sunrise arrived, it cast a beautiful golden light over the coast. It made me feel comfort, and appreciation, and happiness. It made me feel truly alive.

It was a reminder of how I’ve had similar experiences at sunrise in Dominica, Monument Valley, Kauai, and the NC coast. Feeling alone & surrounded by total darkness and the unknown is frightening… but the light always comes. And when it does, it makes things even more beautiful than you remember, it provides opportunity for more exploration & adventure, it restores life.

I often remind myself of this when facing hardship… just wait til the morning sunshine. It never fails. It doesn’t make the hardship less hard in the moment, but it does serve as a reminder that hope is worth holding onto.

In these current dark days, please remember to keep your head up and keep your eyes, mind, and heart open. Stay strong, stay lifted, and survive the nightmare. The light will shine again, it always does.

Since my day job is at UNC, I walk by many of these buildings regularly. For the longest time, I’ve thought about spending an afternoon wandering with my camera & capturing/appreciating the various architectural approaches seen across campus. A few weeks ago, I finally got around to it, and a summer thunderstorm was rolling in which gave me particularly moody skies in a number of these shots.
