There are plenty of places to grab barbecue in the Midlands, but Mission BBQ on Harbison Boulevard is doing something a little different — and it shows from the moment you walk in.

The founders built Mission BBQ specifically to honor the soldiers, firefighters, police officers, and first responders who serve this country, and that mission isn't just decor — it's woven into how the place operates every single day. Every day at noon, the restaurant pauses for a moment to salute America's veterans, military, EMS, and first responders. If you happen to be there when it happens, it tends to stick with you.

The Columbia location gives back locally too — donating to organizations like the SC State Firefighters Association, the SC Law Enforcement Association, Lexington County Sheriff's Department, Irmo Fire, and West Columbia Fire, among others.

The food holds up on its own. The brisket and pulled pork draw consistent praise, the sides are solid, and they offer six different BBQ sauces so there's something for everyone at the table.

A portion of every purchase goes toward families of fallen and injured first responders and military heroes. So you're eating well and doing a little good at the same time.

Worth a visit — and worth bringing someone who served.

One thing that came up again and again after highlighting El Charro earlier this week — people in the Ballentine and Chapin area just really love this place, and they're vocal about it.

What keeps getting mentioned isn't just the food.. it's the whole experience. Warm chips and salsa the moment you sit down, servers who actually pay attention, and a dining room that's consistently described as clean and well-kept. Those details matter, especially at a local restaurant where the experience can vary wildly visit to visit.

El Charro is considered a local favorite, known specifically for its authentic cuisine with dishes that taste like someone actually put thought into them. The Burrito Gordo in particular gets mentioned constantly by first-timers who can't believe the portion size and the flavor, and it's become one of those dishes people specifically drive over for.

They're open seven days a week, running from 11am through the evening, which makes them an easy call whether it's a quick weekday lunch or a laid-back Sunday dinner with the family.

If you've been once and haven't been back recently, it's worth a return visit. If you haven't tried it yet — that's the one to fix this weekend.

If you live anywhere near Dutch Fork Road and haven't made it to El Charro yet, that's worth fixing soon.

El Charro is a casual Mexican restaurant in Irmo serving up the classics — tacos, burritos, sizzling fajitas, margaritas — in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that feels like a neighborhood spot rather than a chain. Everything is made from scratch, and the portions are generous — the kind of place where you regularly leave with a to-go box and zero regrets.

What keeps people coming back isn't just the food — it's the way the place feels. The staff is attentive, the environment is clean and spacious, and regulars often mention the fresh chips and salsa, the carnitas, and the fajitas as standout dishes. They also offer happy hour specials and vegan-friendly options, which makes it an easy call for groups with different tastes.

Locals consistently rank it among the best Mexican restaurants in the Ballentine and Chapin area — and with a 4.7-star average across reviews, that reputation is well earned.

Whether it's a weeknight dinner or a casual weekend lunch, El Charro is one of those places you end up recommending without even thinking about it.

Memorial Day is a time to pause and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. It is a day marked not only by the start of summer, but by a deeper sense of gratitude for the sacrifices that made our freedoms possible.

Across communities, flags are raised, names are remembered, and moments of silence speak to a collective appreciation that words alone cannot fully capture.

As we gather with family and friends, we hold space for reflection and remembrance.
We honor those who served and gave all.
