We’ve looked at 40 Google Business Profiles here in Charleston over the last 2 weeks, and these are the biggest areas where most business owners are falling behind when it comes to getting found locally.
Here’s what matters most, in order of importance:
Not asking for reviews consistently
If you want to grow your Google Business Profile, this is one of the biggest levers. A lot of business owners do good work, but they don’t have a steady system for asking happy customers to leave a review. That means fewer fresh reviews, less trust with new customers, and less activity showing Google that the business is active and relevant.
Not responding to reviews the right way
A quick “thank you” is better than nothing, but most businesses either don’t respond at all or respond in a way that misses the opportunity. Strong review responses help build trust, show customer care, and can reinforce services and location relevance when done properly.
Not posting updates consistently
Google likes active profiles. Most business owners either never post or post randomly when they remember. Regular updates help keep your profile fresh, show Google you’re active, and give potential customers more reasons to trust your business.
Not adding photos on a regular basis
Photos matter more than most people realize. Businesses that consistently upload real, current photos of their work, team, storefront, and finished results usually create more trust and more engagement. A stale photo gallery makes a business look inactive.
Not fully optimizing services
A lot of profiles are missing service listings entirely or have them set up poorly. This is a big missed opportunity because your services help Google better understand what you actually do and when to show your profile in search.
Choosing the wrong primary category
This is one of the foundational pieces of a strong GBP. If your main category is off, even by a little, it can affect how often you show up for the searches that matter most. A lot of businesses either pick a category that is too broad or don’t revisit it when their focus changes.
Not fully completing the profile
Many profiles are half-finished. Missing business details, descriptions, hours, attributes, and other sections can weaken the profile overall. A complete profile gives Google more confidence and gives customers fewer reasons to move on to someone else.
Not optimizing service areas correctly
For service-based businesses in Charleston, service areas matter. A lot of businesses either set them too broad, too narrow, or in a way that doesn’t match how they actually operate. That can create confusion for both Google and potential customers.
Not verifying the profile properly
It sounds basic, but some businesses still haven’t fully verified their listing or have issues tied to ownership and access. If the profile isn’t properly verified and controlled, everything else becomes harder to manage.
Trying to manage the whole thing themselves without a system
This is where a lot of the other problems start. Most business owners are busy running their company, so Google Business Profile management gets pushed to the side. It’s usually not that they do not care. It’s that they do not have the time, consistency, or strategy to do it well month after month.
It’s not the end of the world to miss one or two of these.
The real problem is that most businesses are missing half of them, doing them inconsistently, or doing them in a way that doesn’t actually help them grow.
