Hurricane Dorian - News Release # 7

Sept. 2nd, 2019

The Governor has issued an Evacuation Order for the State of South Carolina effective Noon today. Schools and Government Offices will remain closed this week until further notice. Mayor Woolsey has declared a State of Emergency for the Town of James Island as the threat of significant impact from Hurricane Dorian remains. The Town, in cooperation with the City of Charleston, will begin issuing sandbags today, Monday Sept. 2nd until 5 pm or while supplies at James Island Town Hall – 1122 Dills Bluff Rd. Residents will be limited to 10 bags per household. Enter Town Hall from Dills Bluff Rd and follow directions to ensure a smooth distribution. After 5 pm today, sandbags will not be issued as residents are encouraged to evacuate. The Town has currently issued approximately 9,000 sandbags today.

James Island is in Evacuation ZONE A. [MAP] After an evacuation order is given, everyone on James Island must take SC 171 (Folly Road) to US 17 (Savannah Highway) . Evacuees will then travel south on US 17 to I-526 to the reversed lanes of I-26. One benefit to early evacuation (leaving before the evacuation order,) is that you may choose your own route.

The Town of James Island participated in a Tri-County Conference call today at 12:30 p.m. with Charleston County. The Town of James Island moved to OPCON 1 in conjunction with the Governor’s Evacuation Order. Definition of OPCON levels: http://www.charlestoncounty.org/…/emergency-manag…/opcon.php
