๐ Are you stuck doing research for your college paper? Read below!
How many remember the Internet before Google? ๐
I'm actually old enough to remember being wowed by "Veronica" searches in Gopher Space when I was in college in the early 90's or dialing into local BBS's (Bulletin Board Systems) in the late 80's. ๐พ
Anyone ever have to write a report using books from a local or college library? How about from a partial set 1978 World Book Encyclopedias? Don't know what happened to that elusive 'D' volume...๐คทโโ๏ธ
Fortunately, we've come a long way from dusty books and 300-baud modems.
We have Chat GPT! ๐คฆ

What about Google? ๐
Easy now...
Google is a great tool for finding almost anything but it sometimes it is so powerful that it can "hide" other search systems from us. We may not know the existence of most of them--especially if we need more in-depth information on a more intellectual topic or college-level paper. ๐ค
Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent search engines in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information.
Here's a short list of sites you can use if you want more targeted results for your research: ๐
1. www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
2. www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
3. link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
4. www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries, primarily in South America, the Middle East, and Africa.
5. repec.org - Research Papers in Economics. Volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science. (Not a secure https site but lots of research papers! Make sure you have an AntiVirus and firewall)
6. www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
7. www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 300 million scientific documents curated by the University of Bielefeld Library in Germany, 70% of them are free. Great site if you need documented sources, even from the Deep Web.
8. DuckDuckGo.com is a great alternative to Google. It is a privacy-focused search engine that does not track or store users' personal information. Unlike Google, it emphasizes anonymous searching by not profiling its users and not displaying targeted ads based on search history. It offers a straightforward search experience while prioritizing user privacy.
