Up To Something

Up To Something For small businesses, nothing matters until people know your name. And it takes gut-punching billboards to get it in front of ’em. It takes Todd and Richard.

That billboard ain’t right. Bet the client’s pi**ed.

Oh, sh*t!

Or, that time our Meacham Beauty billboard vinyl took that tired old “before and after” spa trope and stretched it—well beyond anyone’s expectations.

How?

By exceeding the limitations of the medium.

And disregarding the boundaries inherent in hundreds of “billboard best practices” listicles, tucked away all over the internet.

Wrap that around a ridiculously big idea.

Work with a media company like Riley Outdoor, LLC that’s as smart as the work itself. And installers as resourceful as the knives in their pockets.

And, blammo. There it is.

This could be you. It could be your clients …

After a couple decades in the billboard industry, we’ve noticed some concerning things—very concerning things—judging by the pained expression on Richard Molinaro’s face.

Out of home “best practices”—they’re our industry’s bad habits. They’re vague enough to be misinterpreted, yet direct enough to be ignorantly followed.

That’s not helpful. You need deliberate. Detailed.

You need a source that goes beyond the ambiguous billboard creative “best practices” listicles we’ve all come to evangelize.

You need our “Best of the Best Better Best Practices of Out of Home Advertising Creative” video series that covers Contant, Imagery, Color, and Typography—all specifically designed for the issues and challenges that we face daily in this industry.

And you need it now. So jump into our first. Head first.

Todd Turner covers billboard content, and how to organize it. Enjoy!

What types of Mom-and-Pop shops benefit from outdoor advertising?

All of ’em.

But, some will benefit more with different placement and messages.

For instance, The Everyday Market in Belmont, NC or Sumaq Coffee in Charlotte’s LoSo, could benefit from a single billboard ad, within a mile or two of their locations.

Purely promoting awareness.

And steering folks away from the mermaids, the bread place, and the golden arches.

Getting steadier foot traffic and partially covering the inflated cost of ingredients.

Las Mamacita's Mexican Restaurant was able to repeatedly stake their claim in League City, TX, an area oversaturated with not just Tex-Mex, but restaurants of all kinds.

Demanding headspace for anyone with an empty belly. And gettin’ butts in seats as a result.

Or Julian's Plumbing in Charlotte, NC or Johns Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning in Greensboro, NC. Given the scarcity of qualified technicians, they might need a hiring campaign.

Or a series of posters conveying this Spring’s HVAC tuneup deals.

Ensuring a steady flow of applicants, and likely keeping up with the demand that that tuneup campaign’ll bring.

Gulf Coast Windows in Houston saw the benefits of billboard advertising. Year after year. Refreshing their billboard ahead of hurricane season.

It’s simple. Billboards work hard so you can work less. Allowing you more time to run the business.

We could go on and on. Listing out mom-and-pops that we’d love to work with, and how best to utilize out of home in their particular circumstances.

But, in the end, these are our best guesses from the outside looking in.

Supporting these businesses with great advertising creative is important to us. So much so that we have promotional pricing just for mom-and-pops. Check it out: https://uptosomething.agency/momandpop
