Hi! My name is Flora Margaret Edwards 🌸 I go by Flora. I was thinking about when I was born on August 22nd, 2024 at 11:03am EST in Charlotte, NC. That was so cool. My mommy is and she did such an amazing job getting me here. Today is . That’s exactly what mommy did to make me born! Women are such powerful, resilient and wonderful creations. There’s a picture of me and my parents in the hospital when I arrived. It’s funny because it looks like dad is naked like me! We’re all doing good at home now. Everyone is healthy. Life is a miracle. The three of us are doing our best to not take any of it for granted. I took a picture with a flower. Thanks everyone for your kind words and encouragement and for feeding my parents. Look forward to seeing you soon! Okay bye!

The 4th year anniversary gift is flowers and fruit, so we got a new hydrangea to commemorate the occasion and had breakfast at (there was fruit in the jam on our toast).

Sundance Film Festival kicked off this past weekend. In 2009, a short film I directed and made with my friends won the PROJECT:DIRECT International Short Film Competition and was screened at in Park City, Utah.

I was 28 years old, one of my dreams had come true, and it was amazing. I had been noticed and rewarded for something me and my friends had worked really hard on that we were really proud of and I will never forget that. It’s all possible.

If 42-year-old Blake could give 28-year-old a few words of encouragement at that time of his life and career, I would start here:

You’re doing a great job.

You have permission to not worry so much.

Have fun making art with your friends at this early stage in all of your careers and keep doing that year after year.

Bonus Sundance story (see photo):
of ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ fame drank my water. I had left my coat and a room temperature bottled water on a table in a green room during a press event and when I returned from an interview the ‘Starship Troopers’ star was drinking out of it. I introduced myself as I picked up my coat, she was kind, she smiled and introduced herself when we shook hands, and for all good Southerners out there my closing line as I waved and walked away was, “Have a good one, darlin’!” People that hear this story ask me if I was annoyed. Quite the opposite! I was flattered! I let her keep the water.

I turned 42 today! Life is an absolute miracle and I am grateful to have another year of living, laughing, and loving to celebrate.

I get a special kick out of my age lining up with an impactful athlete’s jersey number and famous 42 Jackie Robinson is who I have gravitated towards this year ⚾️ As my gift to you on my birthday, I’ll leave you with this quote of Jackie’s:

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

I do believe lives are important in spite of the impact they have on others, but the spirit of the quote holds true. Robinson lit the torch and passed it on to several generations of Black athletes by breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball in 1947.

My encouragement to us all is to aim upwards and to carry ourselves in a manner befitting of impacting others. It will happen whether we are made aware of it or not.

If I am fortunate enough to receive another 42 years or more, I want those years to be marked by having left a positive impact on those around me.

One month ago today in Altadena, CA on the 1 year mark of Jordan’s death, we planted a mighty live oak overlooking Los Angeles in his honor with part of his remains, and had a beautiful funeral service and reception with really exceptional family & friends, complete with “good food, good music, and good vibes only” at Jordan’s request.

To me, this tangible, tactile, and public recognition has started to make way for a little more closure, and a little more healing in the grieving, one day at a time. So much so that I didn’t realize today was the 18th until my mom texted me with her own realization of today’s date late this afternoon. Instead of going down the condemning road where I would tell myself that I am some sort of forgetful, heartless wretch, I choose rather to believe that the power of this public recognition we all shared in one month ago is doing it’s good work - and that on days like these, people like Jordan who are gone too soon are not shaking an angry fist but are indeed smiling at us, like God smiles at us, walking in the fruit of something as painful and confusing and worthwhile as grief.

Be gentle with yourselves and with each other 💚

Love you always, brother. May be out of sight but never out of mind.
