Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s July 4th weekend remarks saying America owes Black women “everything” are going viral. Speaking at the 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans, Crockett pointed to generations of Black women who have carried families, built movements, protected voting rights, shaped culture, and pushed the country closer to the freedom it often celebrates before fully delivering.

Her message hit a nerve online, especially among right-wing critics who accused her of making Independence Day about race. Supporters saw it differently. For many Black women, Crockett was saying out loud what history has often buried: Black women have helped hold this country together while facing racism, sexism, political attacks, wage gaps, health disparities, and erasure from the stories America tells about itself.

At a time when voting rights, DEI programs, Black history, and women’s rights remain under attack, Crockett’s words landed as more than a holiday message. They became a reminder that celebrating America honestly means naming who built it, who sacrificed for it, and who still has to fight the hardest to be fully seen.
