Happy Mother’s Day (weekend) to Mom’s of all kinds.

This is my 6th year as a Mom, it feels like I’ve been a Mom for much longer, but also no time at all.

Being a Mom is wonderful, full of laughs, hard, exhausting, beautiful, and the most rewarding part of life. The best thing I ever did was pick a partner who I love to walk through parenthood with me. Otto and Arie are such awesome kids and I’m lucky to be their Mom.

The Little Miss Muffin - comes with a story to share.

During the Discovery Call with this client, we realized that my husband and I were their upstairs neighbors when we lived in Charlotte back in 2016! We had an apartment off the Rea Road exit in South CLT and had never met our downstairs neighbors, but a random inquiry 10 years later connected us!

Even though The Little Miss Muffin primarily makes Macarons, she was kindly given the nickname early in her baking years and it just stuck!

We wanted logo mark crafted from the letters in a way that would be easy to create from a single line of icing, that would feel a bit playful, but still allow for easy legibility with each letter. Swipe for a fun, simple brand pattern we made with the mark.

A soft, pastel palette that contain a variety of colors - such a fun process and love where we ended!

Hi, I’m Sarah Wells - owner and lead designer of Swell Design! It was time for an updated introduction!

A few fun facts about me:

🎓 I attended Indiana University and have a Bachelor’s Degree in both Studio Art (Focus: Graphic Design) and in Telecommunications (Focus: Marketing)

🥎 ⚽️ I was a two sport athlete in high school - softball and soccer, and played one year of Club Softball at IU

📱 I met my husband on Tinder in 2014, we got engaged only 5 months after meeting, and we have now been married 10 years!

🎶 My favorite artist is Bleachers! I’ve seen them 5 times.

🏝️ My happy place is anywhere warm with a beach, but I don’t go in the ocean past my knees haha

☕️ I don’t like coffee of any kind, hot or cold. Just not for me.

♥️ ♥️ I am a mom to 2 wonderful boys, Otto and Arie.

I’m forever grateful that this is my job, that I love the work I do, and that I get to work with such amazing clients and team members. Thanks for being here.

I had a small notebook that we kept in a basket next to our landline home phone while I was in elementary school.

Everyday, I would ride the bus home, walk down our relatively long driveway, plop my backpack in the laundry room, and sit in one of the barstools at our kitchen counter.

I’d reach for my small notebook, grab my colored pencils, and draw just one picture on one page. My mom found and showed me this book last week and I remembered it all so well, even though I hadn’t thought about it in years.

Some people don’t know what they want to do for their career or their passion, even as adults. But some people, myself included, seemed to know the general path life will take them on. For me, I think I always knew art would be part of my story, I just had no idea it would look like this business. It’s more than I ever could have dreamed up. ❤️

Another successful Brand Refresh and Expansion project in the books!

We often get on Discovery Calls with potential clients who say something along the lines of, “I have a logo and I like it, but I don’t love it. I also only have one logo layout, in one JPG file. But, I want to keep a resemblance to what I have, people know us from this logo, but I know I’ve outgrown it.”

That’s why this package exists - we take the elements that you do still resonate with, expand upon those items, and build a full visual identity from there. I won’t force you to change what you love about your logo, I’ll simply offer ways to ensure it will be completely usable in all applications and provide you with a wide variety of layouts and file types for versatility down the road!

The other benefit is that this is a much smaller investment than a full brand redesign, and easily added on to a website project!

It’s my birthday! 🎉

Today, I turn 33 years old. I don’t have 33 tips and tricks to running a business, or 33 goals for my 33rd year.

I think what year 32 showed me is that, over the last ten years, I have created a business that has now allowed me to focus on some of my personal goals and actually strive for them. To be able to take time for myself, in the midst of entrepreneurship and motherhood and the typical hustle and bustle of life.

I work hard and I truly love the work I get to do each day (what do you mean I get to create color palettes, research fonts, and draw illustrations everyday?! 🤯), but I am no longer afraid to step away for an hour during my 8-hour work day to go to the gym, or commit to wellness appointments. I can be present at every event for my children and enjoy my evenings and weekends with my family. That is success to me.

I want more of that in year 33. Creating beautiful designs and working hard for the clients that trust me with their brands and websites, and ensuring I am taking care of myself, my loved ones, and my business too.

This space has always been a place I share design, inspiration, connect with other entrepreneurs and designers, and is a place that usually allows for a little disconnect from daily life. That doesn’t feel right at the moment, not even a little.

Empathy isn’t passive.

When someone (or a group) is unjustly experiencing unfairness, fear, or harm, it deserves our attention and our action.

Standing with others means imagining their reality as if it were our own, choosing compassion, and finding ways to help.
