Chatham friends, reminder to request a free ticket at the Orpheum box office in advance.
At the Chatham Orpheum Wednesday, October 1st at 10am, join us for this showing of "Women on the Water."
This free event is hosted by FCW, in partnership with Cape Cod Salties, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, Sea Grant New Hampshire, and WHOI Sea Grant.
In the male-dominated industries of seafood and aquaculture, women have to work twice as hard to prove themselves. But in New Hampshire’s small fishing and aquaculture industries, women have broken down barriers and forged their own paths to success. Women on the Water tells the stories of six women in New Hampshire who have overcome personal and societal challenges to establish themselves in lobstering, seafood distribution, oyster farming, and tuna fishing on their own terms. Discover what independence, determination, and grit look like for women making a name for themselves on the water in the Granite State.
“Friends of Chatham Waterways and its partners believe this is an important short film, reminding us all of the connection we have to the waterways,” said FCW President Kristin Andres. “The Cape has a blue economy, and to help that stay viable, as residents on the Cape we have a responsibility to be good stewards of the land and protect the water quality in our embayments that are the nurseries for fisheries.”
The film was produced by NH Sea Grant and the vision of co-creators Tim Briggs and Gabriela Bradt and director Haley McHatton Ballou.
In addition to the film screening, a panel discussion with local women who work on the water will follow, with local representatives of the fishing community: Renee Gagne, Shellfish Constable for the town of Chatham; Shareen Davis, Co-Founder, Chatham Harvesters; and Kaliope Chute, Owner, Mermaids Menu Oyster Farm. The discussion will be moderated by Gabriela Bradt, producer and co-creator.
The public is invited to attend. This event is free. Advance tickets can be obtained at the Chatham Orpheum Theater box office located at 637 Main Street, Chatham.
