Today, l found what remains of my grandfather's general store on Route 16 in Ole Miss. Growing up, I often heard stories about grandaddy owning a store off the road. A local genealogist identified that it was indeed his store that sold supplies. What a find!

I took hundreds of photos of my Egypt trip, and it was those of the people especially the children that meant the most to me. The gripping poverty and hunger brought tears and stopped me in my tracks. It is a country of extremes...bombed streets next to fabulous hotels...breathtaking Nile next to the desert...some of the most handsome people on earth locked in cultural chambers...an African empire that shaped every aspect of modern civilization even today that was robbed of its wealth and culture by conquerors to the point of disfiguring the African features of the great sphinx and hieroglyphics to hide the truth.

What l did not expect was how much they identify with black Americans. "Same," l heard them say repeatedly pointing to my brown skin. "I will give you the Nubian price."

While on tour, l unexpectedly received so much attention from the passersby, intrigued to see a black American woman tourist amongst the white majority, the tour director assigned extra Egyptian security to me to keep an eye on me. As a journalist, l couldn't help talking to the people.
