If you ever had to do a mock interview in college, you were probably told by some counselor or advisor to “dress for the job you want” when entering the world of work.

While the fashion anti-conformist in me hates that phrase, the core message rings true: Perception is reality.

Just as we think about the way we present ourselves to make the impression we want, we must present our businesses to win the clients we want. Language, design, tone, functionality - branding paints a powerful picture of what our business is and whether or not its worth paying attention to.

Even in a world of WFH sweatpants, perception is still reality, and the way we “dress” our business matters more than ever.

We’re still in the season of new year goals, and if figuring out how to be more innovative and creative is on your list, I hope this serves as a helpful reminder.

It’s easy to think that some people have an almost supernatural ability to read the business tea leaves or think more inventively than the rest of us. But more than a natural talent, creativity is a muscle.

We can all strengthen it by asking more questions, interacting with more diverse people, and giving ourselves SPACE to notice and experience the world around us instead of viewing it through our laptop screens.

I’m committed to seeing the world differently this year and building my business in a way that serves the future, not the past. What about you??

I’ve been thinking a lot about perspective. We each look through a unique lens that adds an awesome individuality to the way we think and behave, but if we’re not careful, perspective also limits us to looking through our own lived experience.

Luckily, we share this planet with billions of other people who inherently see things a little bit differently than we do. All we have to do is ask, listen, and pay a little bit more attention.

What’s the point of repeating what others have done before us? Entrepreneurship affords us the opportunity to create something NEW, and I certainly don’t want to cloud my creativity by accidentally paying too much attention to the competition.

When we focus on our own vision, rather than subtly checking what everyone else is doing, we inevitably become more innovative and interesting.

(And more fulfilled by doing biz on our terms.)

Effective branding is not about boxing yourself into how you  “should” show up in the world. It’s about clarifying the value you deliver, amplifying the purpose that drives you, and packaging your individual spark into an experience people understand, crave, and connect with.

Is my crush on Martha showing yet?

Sure I love her Christmas crafts and cookie recipes, but I’m REALLY lit up by her billion-dollar brand.

When her squeaky clean bubble burst with a prison sentence 😳 she didn’t quit, she changed. And if a friendship with Snoop Dogg doesn’t mark an epic second chapter, I don’t know what does.
