CALL FOR ENTRIES!!
What feels like a very long time ago, I helped install an artists book show. It was a great show, filled with great work, and, if I do say so myself, we did a good job of presenting it. I do think, however, that those of us who installed the show got the best deal. We got to see the whole book. From cover to cover. This gave me the idea of hosting an Artists Book Library in October. I am. Would love if you, or someone you know, would like to share their work. I'm officially calling for entries! If the spacing below hurts your eyes, and you'd like a proper pdf of this e-mail [email protected] Tell your friends!!

Book Arts Library
October 3 - 29, 2015
Submissions Accepted: August 22nd - September 15, 2015
DESCRIPTION: Artists’ Books are a unique artform and a challenging medium to display in traditional art
shows. They are often under glass, and the viewer has access to only the spread selected by the show installers,
or the cover. We hope to create a one month long Book Arts Library where anyone interested can come and view
the book from cover to cover. We will also be showing the work of printers, painters, and photographers and
others who use words or text as the basis of their artwork. You know, for the walls.
MEDIA: This exhibit is primarily for handmade book and paper artists who are willing to have their work handled
(in a supervised setting), so that they can show the book as a whole. We are seeking artist books, book sculptures
or objects, broadsides, sculptural books, zines, graphic novels, comics. Anyone who is interested in having their
work viewed in its entirety.
SUPPORTING EVENTS: We will have posted hours throughout the month where the library will be open to the
public. We will also open by appointment.
The Caxton Club has a confirmed event on October 6th from 6:30 - 8PM that is open to the public.
We have arranged for four speakers to share their work in the book arts. Melissa Jay Craig, Jen Farrell, Marnie
Galloway, and Shawn Sheehy will speak on Wednesday evenings in October. These artists all pursue the book and
paper arts in very different ways. Other events and speakers are in the works.
We have been accepted as a Chicago Artists’ Month event, and will be included in their promotional materials.
IMPORTANT DATES:
August 22nd, 2015 - Submissions will be accepted beginning on August 22nd, and accepted through
September 15th.
Please send a high res photo of your work to [email protected]., and a description of the
work as you would like it to appear in the catalogue. Descriptions may be edited for space concerns.
September 16th - We will announce acceptance on a rolling basis, but final announcements will be sent
by September 16th
Announcement of results will be sent via e-mail.
September 21st: Art Due to gallery
DISPLAY OF WORK: Books will be displayed on both shelves and plinths. We will have pages who bring books
to the front room in the gallery, our Reading Room, where they will be viewed in a supervised setting. Hand wipes
will be available, and gloves will be provided at the request of the artists. But our goal is to allow visitors to the
library to view books in their entireity.
The Broadsides and other 2D art will be hung for display.
MONEY: We are funding this show through a Kickstarter campaign opening soon! Through this we hope to cover
the rent for the gallery space, honorariums for the speakers, and entertainment for opening events. We are not
asking for artist entry fees for this show, but if you were so inclined to kick in. . . . Artists will be responsible for
shipping their artwork to and from the show.
All artwork will be available for purchase, unless otherwise specified by the artists. We will help facilitate payment
through our Paypal account {[email protected]}. We are not taking commissions for sales, but
would welcome support through the aforementioned Kickstarter Campaign.
If we were so blessed as to raise beyond our budget, we will donate any additional money to the Joan Flasch Book
Arts Library and the Newberry Library who are real libraries here in Chicago all the time with artists books you
can visit all the time.
RECEIVING ARTWORK: Artists will be responsible for shipping their artwork to and from the show. Artwork
can be dropped off and picked up for local artists.
Arrangements can be made by contacing [email protected].
IMAGE REQUIREMENTS: Please use the best photos quality photos of your work. We’re told by the printer that
iPhone photos are not optimal, whatever the billboards tell you these days. We are creating a catalogue for the
event that will be the primary resource for our viewers to request work. We are open to artists submitting multiple
works and multiple views of the work (up to three images).
Please name your files as follows:

SHIPPING AND INSURANCE: Shipping and insurance costs are the responsibility of the artist. We will send a
loan agreement with acceptance e-mails. The gallery is monitored by an ADT system, and no one will view the
work in an unsupervised setting. This is the only cost to artists we anticipate.
