NEW EPISODE: I spent an hour with '23 IHSA Coach of the Year, Patrick Gaeger (Saint Viator High School)

Here are 3 tactical takeaways to build an elite program from the inside out:

1) Stop Dictating the Vision:

If the kids don’t define the culture themselves, they won't defend it.

Patrick didn't just hand out the mantra. He assigned the team in groups - separated grades and cliques. They had a week to research and present what it means to them and if they think it fits.

2) The Carpool Culture Builder:

Viator doesn't have an practices 15 mins off campus. Patrick turned the commute into a weapon.

He made a doc for upperclassmen to sign-up with freshmen for carpools. Those 30-mins in a car, everyday, for an entire season, build a bond you can't get in a locker room.

3) Break the Routine:

When you feel a mid-season slump hitting, trade an hour of practice for a classroom culture session. Break the routine to fix the vibes.

I spent an hour with Benet Lacrosse 🥍 HC, Brandon Singleton, and here are the 3 things I learned:

1) Get A Life: You can't authentically lead a kid to be a well-rounded, multi-faceted person if you're a one-dimensional, obsessive mess yourself. Brandon hits the gym, catches live music, and travels. He’s showing staying fresh isn't a luxury; it’s your job.

2) Learn from others: Brandon’s biggest mentor wasn't an old friend of his - it was his direct rival, Andy K. "He was one of the first phone calls to me," Brandon says. "Learning from people who have more knowledge isn't a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of wanting to master your craft."

3) Lead with clarity. Taking over a new program is a trust game, and you win it off the field. "Unclarity is what really confuses and annoys parents," Brandon says. If parents feel prepared, they trust you. If they don't, they'll act like they're the ones with the 15-year resume.

HARRISBURG, IL: "Look, I’ve seen a lot of high school gyms. I’ve seen a lot of guys walk into a new job and talk about "changing the culture" while they’re staring at a whiteboard. But there’s a massive difference between a guy who talks about it and a guy like Jake Stewart who actually builds a gravity well that a whole town can’t help but fall into."

Our recap of interview with Harrisburg High School Girls Basketball Coach, Jake Stewart

I spent an hour with 6x COTY Jake Stewart last Friday. He’s built a small-town powerhouse in Harrisburg, IL (Harrisburg High School)

Here are the 3 things I learned:

1) Paint The Walls. This was the first thing he did. He brought some of the team in and scrubbed the floors of a "nasty" locker room to set a physical standard.

"You need something the team could be proud of."

2) Media days and light shows aren't "fluff." They're a tool to keep your team motivated during a challenging season.

"If you're going to push your girls and you don't have a culture they enjoy, you're not going to have anything at all."

3) Momentum For the Youth Pipeline | He runs his youth camps in October...not summer. Use the Fall Camp as a way to drum up excitement and turnout for your youth winter season.

"If you're not focusing at all on your youth teams, you're not going to be successful"
