My Bubby (Grandma)’s birthday is Valentine’s Day. That means she is going to be 97 years old next week! 🎉
When I was younger, she would babysit my sister and me when my parents would travel. She and my Zaidie (Grandpa) would speak to each other in Yiddish so we couldn’t understand what they were saying (probably complaining about us).
Many Yiddish words have become mainstream in American English – glitch, klutz, bagel, tchotchke, shtick, etc.
I’m not quite sure if my Bubby has been using more Yiddish phrases as she has gotten older, or if I have just been paying closer attention.
If you join her for a meal, she will ask you at least 10 times if you’ve had enough to eat. If you are sitting with her and not eating, she will guilt you into having a little something.
When she’s full, she will announce “genug” (enough), and if the meal was good, she will say “a meichel for the beichel” (a gift for the stomach). 😋
I bought Kyle Letendre's workbook on expressive lettering (because I’m a huge fan of his) and was excited to try it out. While trying to think of a fun phrase to illustrate, meichel for the beichel popped into my head.
Maybe I’ll make more Yiddish art in the future.
Shout out to my fellow female Jewish artists who are making great things:
