The Dangers Of Hiring A Freelancer.

I've heard this a few times recently: "My Website Guy Just Quit!"

Website Builds are notorious for running over timeframes and over budgets.

Everyone knows this and probably has had this painful experience. Some people, who build sites actually plan on it. It’s part of their sales process.

They overpromise on timelines and under bid on costs. Then they win the business but there isn’t enough margin to get the project done right. So half way through they tell the business owner that it’s taking longer and they need to charge more or the work will stop. At this point the business is too entrenched to back out.

I’ve had owners choose another team for cost reasons and then come back to me 6 months later and say it didn’t work out and now they want to work with us to pick up where the other team left off.

What I’m hearing a about recently is website freelancers just quitting in the middle of a project. The excuses I hear range from - “They just had a baby and don’t have time to build the site anymore. I've also heard...

"For mental health reasons they aren’t going to be able to work on the project anymore. Good luck!”

For business owners building a new website it’s important to ask what’s the backup plan if your freelancer quits? Who will finish the project?

A team of one person will leave you in a very difficult position when that person runs into life situations. So find the right team and make sure they have a backup plan.

I know influencers who post and promote a product without even taking it out of the box! They just say whatever the company tells them to say and collects their fee.

Unfortunately, this still works and people still buy products based on these fake recommendations…… BUT people are getting smarter.

If you see an influencer pushing one shampoo as the BEST this week and next week they say the same thing about a different brand….. the gig is up.

So what should businesses do to boost their brand awareness?

Instead find brand ambassadors.

Brand Ambassadors are influencers who love your product genuinely. They did their research and they don’t promote similar products. Often, they post about the same products month over month. They’re partners with the business.

Tim Ferris is a perfect example of this. He talks about products he actually uses AND he tests the market. He talks about playing the Long Game and working only with brands he really cares about. Tim is a brand ambassador for the products he recommends and I often buy the stuff he recommends because of that.

Essentially, I trust Tim, and Tim does the research for me so I can make a quicker decision and have a high likelihood of being happy with the product.

So business owners….. find brand ambassadors to partner with because nowadays …. People don’t trust influencers.

Some clients just aren't worth it. It's important to know the red flags of who not to work with. And sometimes a "no thanks" today saves you a bunch of trouble down the line.

Growth Driven Design – A new approach to building websites.

The old approach to building websites looks like this…..

Find a website team, pay them to build your website.
Expect delays and cost overages.
Get through the pain.
And then let your website sit for a few years and thank God you’re not going through that trauma again anytime soon.

Don’t be fooled into thinking this is the only way. The Antidote….is Growth Driven Design.

Very simply this is an iterative process to web building. We design and build and push edits live and then gather information on what’s working and what’s not. Then we use that information to design and build again.

We use this iterative approach to A/B test different aspects of a website to continually make data driven improvements. The downfall, is that it takes continuous work and some time. The benefits is your website keeps improving over time.

I think this is a good trade.

For after all, your website is often your main hub for driving business 24/7 and one of the first impressions people get of your brand. In reality your website is never done.

Kaizen - means continuous never ending improvements in Japanese.

I’d apply this approach and Growth Driven Design to your website.

3 Misconceptions About Growing Brands.

Every business owner is trying to grow their brand. I talk with them daily.

Here are 3 common Misconceptions I hear from business owners.

1. They want instant gratification.

Often the desire for instant gratification can shoot people in the foot. They want the one ad that creates enough urgency to cause people to respond immediately. This is also the ad most likely to be forgotten when your special offer expires. Instead think long term and build an identity for your brand in the minds of your target audience.

2. Creating Ads instead of campaigns.

Many business owners want one ad, to tell the whole story and get a sale or a deal. They overload their target audience with all the things their brand does and the value they bring and the target audience forgets them all. Instead focus on campaigns with multiple ads. Each ad should have 1 powerful point to get across to the target audience. Repeat these points so they stick in your target audiences’ mind. Use the campaign to educate and entertain your audience in a way they will remember and a way that compels them to take action.

3. Unsubstantiated Claims

Businesses often claim to have exactly what the customer wants. The “highest quality for the lowest cost.” Everyone says this and people are tired of hearing it. Instead you need to back up your claims. For example, if you head over to HawkeMedia.com you can view our case studies and see real numbers from real clients. You can also see the many awards we’ve won for “Marketing Excellence” from third parties.

We back up our claims and you should too!

Now, if you want to talk with me about how to really grow your brand, with real results, then send me a message and I’d love to chat.
