Continuing
In Black people are often categorized as People of Color (POC) and BIPOC. It's not accurate though. How can we get this right? The #1 question decision-makers and business leaders ask me, is "How do African Americans want to be addressed?"

"While all are Black by race, not all Black Americans are African Americans... [so] it's a safe bet to stick with the racial identifier 'Black American' as an umbrella description." It includes Black Caribbeans, Black Europeans and African immigrants for example. POC and BIPOC aims to be inclusive, but it's de-centering.

- represents the Black, Asian, Hispanic and Native American collective
- represents Black, Indigenous and People of Color

Combining these segments to streamline research might seem like it is a time and effort saving strategy, but it always leaves these cultures feeling unseen and undervalued. Sameness, in this case, is misleading, promotes ambiguity and is unauthentic.

CAP BLACK. The Standard is to captialize “Black” when referring to Black people, as it is commonly interchangeable with African-American, but more importantly refers to a distinct culture of people. The AP and many other respected publications have adopted this Standard, and for good reason. In my professional opinion, the lowercase use of the word deduces a person, and a people, to a color and a lower rank in race. When in fact, Black people are more than a color. Black people hold tremendous value as a culture full of ingenuity, invention, resilience, strength. We’re worthwhile
consumers that are necessary for the growth and success and many American institutions.

“The style guide of the American Psychological Association declares, as it has for a generation: “Racial and ethnic groups are designated by proper nouns and are capitalized.”

I share this and other helpful in my newest book “Let Me Explain Black Again”.

are the go-to segment for marketers and brand decision makers because they’re progressive, innovative, tech savvy and adaptable. But Black mills are NOT as mainstream as some may think! I present these statistics in almost every Black Insights presentations and keynote I head up throughout the US. While they are adaptable, they lead with a strong and they’re proud to walk around .

I admire the young folks who started their own movements and brands dedicated like .co and so many other amazing organizations and companies. Black are taking the reigns and filling the gap when it comes to being the change they want to see. They’re no longer reliant on big brands to tell their story, or accommodate their voices. They’re speaking out in bold ways and the is here for it!

In my second book, “Black Still Matters in Marketing”, I talked about how American marketers use the same message to appeal to the Black consumer, simply because we speak English. Often times it’s a mistake because Black Americans have a different history, different lens, different values and different struggles.

“A common misconception about the African-American segment is that because Blacks speak English, and consume mainstream media, there is no need to develop any targeted communications to reach out to them."

are one of my favorite segments to discuss. They are bold, fearless, and . While most of them are adaptable and navigate environments like work spaces, social media and mainstream landscapes in general, they are NOT as mainstream as some may think.

Black Millennials have a woke eye on their purchasing power and they hold big brands accountable for standing up for what matters to them: equality, diversity, inclusion, doing good and depicting Black in a positive light.
