will be giving a talk and facilitating a discussion on exhibition design tomorrow on zoom with !

From MCAD’s page:

Untangling complexities, and providing context, analysis, and synthesis help create a broader perspective of important social issues and historical narratives. Through the use of objects, graphics, and multi-dimensional space, exhibition design tells these stories.

Join us via zoom on 30 June, Thursday, at 3PM for a talk on exhibition design to be given by Rina Alfonso, Founder & Creative Director of Studio Aorta. Register here https://forms.gle/rZzapHZQUUMEfRtk8

In 2020, we created prospectus booklets for a new traveling exhibition under development for . For this particular exhibit, we were tasked to pare down the design so that the landscape photography and nature photos could be the star, but also create elements that related to the sensibility of the exhibit, covering science, indigenous cultures, and natural history.

We used large photographs + accent illustrations provided a rustic yet intentional use of motifs that were inspired by the objects in the exhibition. The bold yet organic color palette complements the artistic sensibilities of the photographs while staying connected to the themes of nature, science, and culture.

Now on exhibit at SIGAL Gallery: “Catastrophic Collapse: Lessons Learned, After the Fall.” We used a black motif to resemble crumbling which evokes a sense of unease or breaking apart for visitors. Seen from the street is a bright layered mural that draws the public in to see this free exhibit in downtown DC.

The exhibition features some of our nation’s most catastrophic structural disasters—from the South Fork Dam and Tacoma Narrows Bridge to the Northridge Meadows Apartments and the World Trade Center. Each catastrophic collapse offers a story with lessons learned that improved the way we design buildings today.

Open May - July.

The goal of the project was to create the overall exhibition and graphic design for an exhibit in a 1,000 square foot gallery. The space needed to be transformed from a gallery with exhibits for a school age audience to a more serious and refined tone that complemented the subject matter, Civil rights and the relationship of a community with the police. Swipe through our case study to learn more about our exhibit from 2018 at .
