Should your brand be engaging in “BRANTER”?

First, what is “Branter”? It’s a combination of the words brand + banter. We often see branter online when businesses enter into viral comment sections with consumers via online platforms.

Although the term is new, the tactic is not, but the news is lately buzzing about branter, as studies continue to show more and more consumers expect brands to speak up about the things that matter to them.

But even a well-timed piece of branter isn't enough to build long-term value. Yes, it can raise awareness and help communicate your brand’s personality, BUT and this is a big BUT, if it’s misjudged, it can make you look desperate.

You’re better off thinking about your long term strategy when it comes to evaluating how you want to reflect your values to clients and customers through your messaging strategies.

YES, you should continue to meaningfully engage with your audience online but be careful not to jump on every viral comment to avoid what can quickly become a virtual sparring match.

Show me a compelling brand story and I’ll show you a thriving business. Our agency recently coined the term “Brand Bravery” as a rally cry for all of our clients to own their story.

It’s not important to know exactly what colors will go in your color palette or what fonts you want to use - what’s MOST important is that you SHOW UP!

📌 Be Brand Brave! That doesn’t mean smiling and having a cookie cutter message. Being brand brave means saying ‘me too’, it means getting your hands dirty, it means putting your heart out there, it means sharing your real story.

📌 Listen closer. This might sound counterintuitive to telling your story but listening for insights from your audience or network will help you know which parts of your story will be most impactful and help move the needle.

📌 Pay attention. Take notice of which parts of your story you tell more naturally and which parts feel clunkier to tell. Practice the clunky pieces in the mirror or by writing them out to help you tell them more naturally.
