Mi querida Lo**ta.  The ancestor I never met but I feel divinely connected to. Today we honor you with Women Empowerment.

I hope we are making you proud. That we move in a way that showcases your determination to be not only seen but heard.

Her life was filled with struggle and victory every step of the way. Traumatized by the violence she witnessed in Puerto Rico at the hands of our current oppressors - finding joy in spaces and being crowned a beauty queen because of how captivating she was. Having children out of wedlock - leaving the island in hopes of a better life and leaving her children behind, like so many still do. Working as a seamstress in NY and being treated poorly but dealing with it to get by. Finding community with others who had similar beliefs of a liberated and self-governed Puerto Rico & creating a connection with El Maestro himself - Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos - even though they never met. He believed in her spirit, he knew she was special and he wasn’t wrong. Leading the charge at the capital and expecting to die just to bring attention to the colonization of Puerto Rico and its need to have independence, not just a seat at the table. She pushed through 25 years of imprisonment and the death of her 2 children while incarcerated.

You were a force. You lived with audacity. You showed up & showed out not allowing what anyone had to say stop you from fighting for what you believed was right.
