Reverend Michael Woolf grew up in a fundamentalist Christian church in Alabama. Today, he feels compelled by his faith to speak out against brutal detention policies he believes violate Christian teachings and the Bible.

Reverend Woolf was violently beaten and arrested while peacefully protesting outside the Broadview ICE detention facility in Chicago. “What’s going on at Broadview is torture.” He warns that ICE is behaving like a paramilitary force able to act with impunity, reminiscent of 1930s Germany.

As Christians mark Ash Wednesday and enter the season of Lent, a time of repentance, reflection and recommitment to the teachings of Jesus, Pastor Woolf says this moment demands moral clarity and action. Drawing from the Gospel of Matthew 25, he reminds believers that what we do for “the least of these” is what we do for Jesus himself.

He concludes: “There’s absolutely no one coming to save us. There’s no one coming to save these people. There’s no one going to stand up for them except for the people who are here right now, who care.”
