Trends aren't just for fashion. A macrotrend is simply a collection of data analysis about the current world as it is happening. By studying a current macro trend, we can more accurately predict and navigate the times.

Color has an extremely powerful effect on humans. Let's take a look at previous macro trends as it relates to color

In 2008 we saw a lot of grays and dark, deep purples. In fact, Pantone's Color of the Year was Blue Iris; a color known for evoking meditative and soul-searching emotions. Between The Great Recession, the ongoing Middle Eastern War, and the emergence of more modern-day social media, there was a lot going on and people were looking inward to avoid the outward. People were scared! As a whole, we lacked the confidence we once had in the 90s.

Jump to 2016, and for the first time in Pantone's Color of the Year history, they chose 2 colors-- Rose Quartz and Serenity. These 2 colors were indicative of what was happening around the world. People were exploring holistic treatments a mainstream solution, meditation, tarot cards, and horoscopes were also emerging into the mainstream as acceptable forms of entertainment and sources of authority for some. Did you know J.P Morgan once said, "millionaires don't have astrologers but billionaires do." Truly ahead of his time

Flash forward to 2019, Living Coral was announced as Pantone's 2019's Color of the Year. Only a few short months ago and you probably remember the optimism we all once shared for the new decade. Lol RIP 2020 plans

Macro trends are extremely fun to study and easy once you train your eye!

4 Ways to Spot Macrotrends

1) Read your local, national, and international newspapers. Twitter is a great way to stay informed by the minute. Just be sure you're getting info from trusted sources

2) Stay up to date on changing technologies

3) Learn to spot something when you see it (even in varied forms) on a regular basis.

4) Economics plays a HUGE role in trends, consumer confidence is key. Make sure you know what's going on with the economy!

With all of the economic uncertainty, many businesses are erring on the side of caution and slowing, or even halting, ad and marketing spend altogether. But should your business really throw in the towel? ⁣

No!⁣

In 1895 Post Cereals was founded by C.W Post and manufactured their first product, 'Grape Nuts.' Less than 10 years later, W.K. Kellogg founded Kellogg's Cereals in 1906, launching their own take on breakfast cereal, Toasted Corn Flakes. By 1920, Kellogg's and Post Cereals were neck and neck on the breakfast cereal market. But when the Great Depression hit, Post decided to slash their advertising budget, while Kellogg's forged ahead with their marketing and ad spend. Today, Kellogg's is the world's leading producer of cereal and convenience foods. ⁣

The moral? No matter how scary it may seem to keep spending during an economic downturn, it can set you up for stronger brand positioning on the other side of the storm. As a result of continuing marketing and ad spend, consumers will view your brand as stable and a safe buy. ⁣

Here are 3 of our favorite economic downturn marketing and ad tips:⁣

1) Utilize Influencers ⁣
In the 1930s, marketers used a technique called "hypnotic trance." This simply meant putting their product next to a favorite celebrity. Sound familiar? Influencer marketing is nothing new! And the best part? It works! Like, really really well. Seek out influencers who align with your brand's core values and mission to help positively align your brand's products during tough times. ⁣

2)Get Loud!⁣
Now is not the time to squirrel away and become silent. But we don't literally mean go outside and start yelling at the sky! Posting on your social platforms, hosting Live sessions, engaging with your online followers and email list, and continuing to create new content is a great way to keep your brand's voice heard all through the streets!⁣

3)Avoid Forced Selling ⁣
No one likes to feel like they're being sold to. Trying to force your brand or industry onto an unwilling consumer or market is not going to help you break new markets during uncertain times. Treat your marketing and advertising as an open door for new and potential consumer

The work Edward L. Bernays did in the early 20th century has completely shaped and molded how we operate in the marketing, PR, and advertising world today! With some newfound downtime, I’m brushing up on some old reads, including Solomon's 'The Art of Client Services'. After all, what’s old is new again! What are you reading? ⁣
⁣⁣

Bernays is one of my favorite teachers. Unfamiliar with Bernays and his work? The Father of Public Relations is best known for: ⁣

•The Pancake Breakfast for President Coolidge (one of the very first overt publicity stunts) ⁣⁣
•Adding a symbolic egg 🥚 to instant cake mix boxes to secure sales ⁣⁣
•Convincing Americans bacon and eggs were the true American breakfast staples 🥚🥓⁣⁣
•Creating a campaign to convince women to grow their hair longer in order to secure declining hair net sales ⁣⁣
•In 1934 convinced fashion houses, prominent women socialites, and interior designers to push the color green to be en vogue so Lucky Strike ci******es could keep their female clientele as the packaging previously clashed with their outfits⁣
•Urged Proctor & Gamble to host Ivory soap sculpting contests for school children across the US to be judged by prominent figures and artists⁣

“Modern business must have its finger continuously on the public pulse. It must understand the changes in the public mind and be prepared to interpret itself fairly and eloquently to changing opinion.” Edward L. Bernays, Propaganda ⁣⁣

My nails may be broken but my spirits are not 🤍✨⁣

The word of the week is P•I•V•O•T⁣

Change may be the only constant in this world but no one was ready to experience as much change as we have collectively over the last week. We've lost and found our minds at least a dozen times, so here are our favorite tips to keep you and your clients sane, healthy, and happy⁣

1) Keep on Keepin' On⁣
It's more important than ever to maintain marketing. With people going into self-quarantine and self-isolation, they'll be online more now than ever! This is the perfect time to connect and establish those relationships with those in your community... even if from a distance. ⁣

2) Don't Be Crass ⁣
It may be tempting to feed into the fear, capitalize on the fear, and spread (even innocently) misinformation. Only share info directly from the CDC website or your local government. Avoid ads, promo codes, and sales that capitalize on the virus.⁣

3) Adapt ⁣
With all of the new rules, regulations, and safety precautions coming to all of us at lightning speed, the best thing you can do right now is simply adapt. While you might want to panic (we definitely have, no lies here), you have to keep moving forward. Whether that means adjusting your post schedule, content or collaborating with your clients to come up with new, innovative ideas for their own business, adapt. While normally we wouldn't advocate scope creep, we're all in this together and together is the only way we'll survive. ⁣

4) Take a Nap⁣
No, seriously. Close your eyes. Stop reading headline after headline. You can't control what's happening right now but taking time to rest your eyes and mind will help you stay clear-headed and focused. Now is not the time to feel guilty when it comes to taking care of yourself.

Social media is an easy and free tool to market your next upcoming event! Here are our top 4 tips for a successful event:⁣

1) Good Content 📸⁣
Creating content is easy. Creating good content that captures the ambiance, style, and vibe of the event space is another thing. Make sure that your content is visually appealing, engaging, easy to see, and captures the vibe of your event and the event space. Don’t be shy.. hire out a photographer if necessary!⁣

2) Consistency is 🔑 ⁣
This isn’t a set it and forget it deal. Nor is it a build it and they will come. No matter how spectacular your event may be, you’re competing with dozens of other schedules and events. Weekly reminders leading up to your event and day-of reminders are a good way to stay at the forefront of your target audience’s mind.⁣

3) Create an Event Hashtag #️⃣⁣
Hashtags aren’t just some frivolous add-on. Hashtags are how imagery is categorized and filed online. Creating an event hashtag allows you to create a pulse point for attendees and those who can’t make the event. Through this event hashtag your event can live on long after the event date has passed. It serves as a fun memory space, as well as a space to inspire others who may be interested in hosting an event with you in the future. ⁣

4) Work With Influencers 🤳⁣
Influencers are an easy way to reach audiences that you’re interested but may not know how to break in to. Inviting a few influencers to your event can help promote your event leading up and post-event. Additionally, influencers are typically well connected within their communities and serve as easy resources to create and develop longstanding collaborative relationships with.
