Hmmmm… At only 16% body fat, I’m in the top 5% of males in the country, yet the old, outdated, yet still-in-use scale of BMI (Body Mass Index) says that I’m “overweight”.

Wanna more accurate way to know if you’re normal, overweight, or obese?

1. Strip down and look at yourself in the mirror and give yourself an honest assessment.
Or
2. Grab a tape measure and measure yourself around the widest part of your belly. Then measure your height. If your height is less than 2X your belly measurement- you’re overweight.

The State of the Auto Repair Industry

Over the past couple of months, I’ve been asking auto shop owners a lot of questions, reading lots of articles, and keeping a birds-eye view on what the impact the events of 2020 has been having on the industry.

While not a scientific study by any means, here are some of the highlights of what I’ve been able to gather (assuming you’re interested):

=> 20% of repair shops are on pace to make even more money this year*
=> 30% are going to break even with last year
=> 50% unfortunately are having a down year

(*For what it’s worth, I’m talking about net - the take-home ‘keepsie’ money that's left over after everyone else gets paid - not overall sales -- Many are reporting higher sales, but actually making less money!)

Most every shop owner is reporting that they have been working harder, spending more hours at the shop, and are working on fewer vehicles on average.

The technician shortage hasn’t gone away (go figure!)

And for the first time that I can ever recall, many are considering it a ‘win’ just to be breaking even with last year.

=> What interested me the most was what was happening with the 20% of shops that are doing BETTER this year than last. I mean, what the heck are they doing that caused their business to grow while the overwhelming majority of the industry is staying the same or are experiencing a down year???

The answers might surprise you.

Rather than trying to write it all out, I’ve decided to host a live online meeting (Oh god, not another Zoom meeting???) this Wednesday at 4PM ET where I’ll lay out exactly what I discovered that’s keeping the top 20% of shops busier and making them more money than everyone else.

Go here to get registered for the live meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/.../501.../WN_1nAhiWsMROeKj8SOGU3WWg

I'll be going over a lot of material, so make sure to clear your schedule so you won't get distracted and miss out on anything.

Look, I get it. You might be ‘zoomed’ out. The thought of sitting in front of your computer for an hour makes you want to scream.

Well, as I see it, you’ve got two choices:

1. Decide that you could care less about why these shops are killing it right now, and figure it's not worth your time.

2. Decide that what I discovered and will share might contain some killer nuggets of info that you can put to use in your own shop, put aside your disdain for video meetings, and go register to join us on the live meeting.

(If you can’t be there live, register anyway. I’ll record it and give you an extra 24 hours to watch the recording 🙂)

Do you need more new customers - or is there another problem that you might need to fix first?

> The average car on the road is about 12 years old
> An 8-15 year old car needs service 2 or 3 times per year
> A typical family has at least two vehicles

If you agree with the above, let's move on with a little math.

> Based on the above, each customer should come to your shop 4-6 times per year (2 vehicles in each household X 2 or 3 visits per vehicle)

This part is very important:
Do yourself a huge favor and take a peek inside your shop management software and see how close you are to getting those 4-6 visits from each of your current customers per year.

If you're not getting anywhere near 4-6 visits on average from your current customers, do you think you need to add more new customers, or do you think you just might have a retention problem that needs to be addressed?

Impossible vs Reality...

If I told you that you could double your sales, you might say to me, “That’s impossible”

If I told you that you could triple your take-home pay, you might say, “That’s impossible!”

How about doubling your sales, tripling your take-home pay…and… working only 15 hours per week…plus… finding plenty good help to do all the work for you?

Impossible?

Understandably, if you’ve been busting your butt for years trying to achieve these things, but still falling short - they may all seem to be impossibilities.

But…

The reality is, if someone is doing it already, it’s not impossible at all.

Big towns, small towns, affluent areas, or depressed income — I guarantee there is a shop owner making it happen regardless of these factors.

Right now there is a shop owner somewhere running the same-sized shop as you, in a similar marketplace as you, who is outselling you 2 to 1. Another is taking home 3X as much as you. There are gobs of owners running remote businesses.

And the biggie. Right now there is an owner struggling with the decision on which of the 4 killer techs that he interviewed that he should hire today.

Fortunately, we get to work with clients every day that are achieving this kind of stuff all the time, so I get to see these realities. first hand

If someone else is doing it, why not you?

For years it was thought impossible to run a 4-minute mile, but once Roger Bannister did it in 1954, nine other did it soon after. Over 500 so far. Today, even high-schoolers are doing it.

How do you make these ‘impossibilities’ into ‘realities’ for you?

First, change your mind and know for a fact that it can be done.

Second, reset your goals.

Third, do things differently because if you keep doing the same things every day, you’ll keep getting the same results.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Post them below.
