Tucked away on the outskirts of Lancaster sits the eerie and long-forgotten Fairfield County Infirmary a place where history and heartbreak seem to linger in the walls. Built in 1828 as a poorhouse, it was meant to shelter the county’s most vulnerable: the sick, the elderly, and those with nowhere else to go. Over the decades, its purpose shifted, housing not only the poor but also individuals struggling with mental illness often in conditions that, by today’s standards, would be considered inhumane.

Whispers of overcrowding, neglect, and tragedy have followed the infirmary through time. Countless deaths occurred on the property, some expected… others far more mysterious. As the years passed and the building fell into disrepair, it didn’t just lose its function it gained a reputation. Visitors and investigators alike have reported shadowy figures, disembodied voices, and an overwhelming feeling that they are not alone.

That’s what makes this week’s investigation even more intense.

CPI traveled straight into the heart of this location, and the anticipation has been building but what really set the tone was the trailer video put together by Chad.

This week, Cincinnati Paranormal Investigations is traveling to Lancaster OH to investigate one of the most well-known haunted locations in the region — the Fairfield County Infirmary.

Originally built in 1828, the infirmary served as a home for the poor, elderly, and mentally ill who had nowhere else to go. Over time, it became overcrowded, and conditions reportedly declined. Many residents spent their final days within those walls, and stories of neglect and suffering have followed the property for decades.

Today, the building is known for a wide range of reported paranormal activity. Visitors and investigators have claimed to hear unexplained footsteps, disembodied voices, and doors moving on their own. Shadow figures have been seen in the hallways, and many people describe an overwhelming feeling of being watched, especially in the upper floors and basement areas.

CPI will be conducting a full investigation of the property, using audio, video, and other equipment to document anything that may be present. Locations like this are known for their intense history, and that often plays a role in the type of activity reported.

The Fairfield County Infirmary has built a reputation over the years, but the goal remains the same — to document, debunk, and determine what is actually happening inside.

We captured a loud unexplained bang and it was caught on 3 different camera audios. Everyone was accounted for and no one was near us. This happened inside the cafeteria at Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary.

First and foremost we want to wish everyone a Happy New Year! We apologize for the lack of videos however we wanted to start the year off right by publishing one of the best investigations to date.

CPI hit the road and traveled over 4 hours to Petros, TN to investigate the historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. This former maximum security prison is known for its intense history and decades of reported activity. During our investigation, we captured some of our best visual evidence to date, compelling spirit box responses, and even recorded audio of a door slamming shut on its own. We’re grateful for the opportunity to investigate such an iconic location, stay tuned as we begin sharing what we captured!
