What is bleed and why do we need it?

In printing, when a design extends all the way to the edge of the finished piece, it must include extra image area beyond the trim line. This additional area, known as the bleed, ensures that when the piece is trimmed, there are no unwanted white edges caused by slight variations in the cutting process.

It's also important to maintain a safe margin inside the trim line. While modern printing and finishing equipment is highly accurate, minor variations can occur. Keeping text, logos, and other important design elements within the safe margin helps ensure they are not accidentally trimmed.

VECTOR VS. RASTER

Long story short: VECTOR is best for text and logos, RASTER is best for photos.

In printing, everything that we digitally produce falls into 2 categories, VECTOR and RASTER formats. Both are important, but there are cases when one works better than the other. There are even cases when only one of these formats will do. A photo will most likely be RASTER and a logo will most likely be VECTOR. Keep in mind that for making dies and for many advertising specialties, only VECTOR is acceptable. RASTER cannot be used for these processes.

VECTOR is created using lines and coordinates, where RASTER is created by many pixels making up the image. In the example above, we exaggerated the pixels in the word RASTER, so you can see that it is made up of a bunch of squares. VECTOR graphics will have smooth lines at any enlargement. RASTER graphics can always be reduced, but they lose quality when they are enlarged.

What color is that, really?

When it comes to black, some colors are great and others just will not do.

The first sample, the swatch on the left is 100% BLACK ink. This works best for body copy. Since it is only one of the 4 inks used in CMYK, there is no chance of a problem with the body copy getting out of register if you only use one color of ink.

The second sample, REGISTRATION, is only for crop marks and registration marks. It should never be used as part of a design. It uses 100% of each of the 4 inks used in CMYK and will leave too much ink on the paper, setting the work up to offset.

The third sample, #000000, is RGB Black. Unfortunately, it doesn’t translate to 100% Black and can create registration problems. When it converts to CMYK the mix breaks down as 75%C, 68%M, 67%Y and 90%K. While it is not too much ink, it’s way more than is needed to make simple black on press.

The fourth sample, RICH Black, is a mix we like to use for big areas of black on press. 100% Black can get a little washed out on a large area, so we give it a helper. In this case it is 20%C, 20%M, 20%Y and 100%K. Another mix that is commonly used is 40%C, 0%M, 0%Y and 100%K. Theres a thing called “kick back” that happens if the mix contains 100%K, but that’s a story for another day. (Note that #000000, does not have 100%K when it is converted to CMYK, so the magic kick back will not happen with that mix.)

Hints for Exporting Print-Ready PDF Files from Canva

- When setting up your document, opt to show print bleed and make sure imagery goes all the way into the bleed if it goes to the trim
- Allow for plenty of margin between the trim and the live area
- Download using File Type: PDF Print, √ Crop marks and bleed, Select CMYK
- DO NOT "Flatten PDF"
